XP Problem

I was trying to help my mate install Talk Talk on his PC, as he'd tried himself and it kept crashing half way through.
After a lot of effort it finally installed. I stuck ZoneAlarm on it and installed AVG anti virus. Once AVG was installed it needed a reboot. However, now it comes up with a Windows login all the time. Before, they just had two users on the PC, neither of which had passwords. It's now showing the login box asking for a password. If I leave it blank and hit return it loads up the desktop picture, waits about 10 seconds, then goes back to the login screen, never actually showing the task bar or anything else. If I change the username logging in you do get the right background picture for the user, but nothing else.
Anyone heard of this before please? I wasn't sure if it might be a virus or something?
They now can't get into anything, and I feel a right **** as I was the one who has left their PC in this state![Frown](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/frown.gif)
It's Windows XP Home if that makes any difference.
Cheers
