Our Athlon 850 desktop is 6 years old and was running Win98, which our Swiss internet bank doesn't allow anymore. It has 2x 80 gig disks and 512Mb RAM. Don't use it for anything more than internet, emails and home accounts so the lack of processing power isn't apparent. I do my photo and video editing on the lappy anyway.

So I did the following -
Win XP home from Dutch ebay site: 40 quid incl registered postage
Replaced CD burner with LG DL DVD drive : 28 quid
Replaced 32mb graphics card with a Nvidia 6200a AGP with 256 Mb : 37quid
Replaced 17" crt monitor with 20" Samsung 203B (1400 x 1050) : 170 quid


So for 275 English notes or 400 Euros I reckon I'll be okay for another 4 years unless something breaks and the Samsung looks pretty too.
The other option was to shell out a grand on a new Dell.
