Default Wireless works when not encrypted but doesn't when secure....

I have two systems, laptop and desktop. Laptop is connected to Netgear router via Netgear adapter PC card. PC is wireless enabled.

The laptop connects fine when encryption is set up, but when you try to connect PC to router, it asks for network password. When I enter the password provided by Sky, it says....
"The network password needs to be 40bits or 104bits depending on your network configuration. This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexidecimal characters."

The password provided is 8 uppercase letters

Anyone got any ideas as I've just spent 30 minutes on the phone to India and its apparent that they aren't even going to come close to resolving this

I could just leave my wireless insecure I guess.... Whats the worst that can happen, someone piggybacks my connection?

shot in the dark....... have you setup the adapter for wep and the router wants a WPA password?

start > control panel > network connection > right click wireless adapter and select properties

i would defo NOT leave it open, use wep or wpa if adapters permit

WEP would appear to be the only option for my adapter, and the router is set up for a wep password.

I think your problem is you're using the wrong password. Sky wouldn't provide you with a WEP password for your router. The password for the router is normally selected by you in the config menus for the router itself.

What is the exact model of the router you're using?

Netgear DG834GT is the router.

Why is it so imperative that security be used?

to stop people using your connection basically, yeah the password would be setup using the router. If the adapter doesnt support WPA then use 128-bit wep...not brilliant but better than nothing. You would need a 13 digit ascii password which would be entered into the router and pc

And turn off SSID broadcast if you havent already - that way no-one else should see your network (at least it won't have a name). You might also want to think about connecting by know MAC address only.

I am able to log into the router setup page and alter WEP/WPA security setting etc, so what is the password that Sky gave me for?

In my PC's wireless network connection properties, I have the following.....

SKY SSID - SKY02345

Network Authentication - choice of Open, Shared, WPA, WPA PSK, WPA2, WPA2 PSK

Data Encryption - Depends on above choice of authentication....
Open - Disabled or WEP
Shared - Disabled or WEP
WPA - AES or TKIP
WPA PSK - AES or TKIP
WPA2 - AES or TKIP
WPA2 PSK - AES or TKIP

Underneath these, the network key can be entered, and there is a check box to say "key is provided for me automatically"

There is also a "Key index (advanced)" choice of 1, 2, 3 or 4

This is all beyond my limited ability, help?
