Will buy/build a new machine sometime in the future. However, for now will my machine have a chance at running Vista (premium, not basic)?
1.5Ghz Pentium P4
768MB RAM (sdram, 133)
18GB HDD free (out of 40GB)
NVIDIA GeForce2 MX//MX400 graphics
If not (and I'm not optimistic but it runs XP no problemo), is there a single part that could be upgraded or are they all short?
I've seen the MS "minimum" specs but want to know what the REAL minimum specs are!

I expect you'll get it to run, but I doubt you'll get the new fancy aero user interface with a geforce 2 (it requires minimum of a dx9 card), the drive space is a bit low, as is the system memory. It should run ok with the processor though...
Personally, I'd stick with xp with that spec.

It will run it - yes, But vista is a complete system hog. I wouldn't run it on such a system. Well not unless I swtiched off the Aero enviroment and went for the classic view.
You really need to up your processor, your RAM and you graphics card if you want of most out of the Aero environment. I have a test machine running Vista Ultimate on a P4 2.6GHz with 768MB RAM and a FX5200 - and whilst being perfectly usable, its a bit clunky.
To be honest, there is no real reason to switch to vista right now, and certainly not just for the sake of it - stick with XP on that machine is my advice.

Out of curiosity, do you think the following would run Vista fairly well?
1.83GHz Intel Core Duo
2MB L2 Cache
1.5GB Memory
ATi Radeon X1600 128MB VRAM

using it on a 1.6Ghz Laptop 1Gb Ram & crappy onboard graphics card. All runs perfectly fine apart from aero stuff which doesnt run. (its for business use anyway so the graphics doesnt matter)

Pretty sure my MacBook Pro will be OK ![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
However, my crappy PC -
Athlon 2Gig
1Gig pc5300 ram
ATiI 9700 Pro card
Plenty of HD space..
Should be OK, should I choose to *** up my PC with an OS without any service packs!!![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Waddya think?
