Only recently started using msn messenger so a bit of a noob with this, but seeem to be able to transfer files at a normal rate. However when I try to receive files they seem to download at a max rate of 2kbs a second,even though the person sending the file is also on 8 meg bt broadband

Doesnt matter what speed your on, it depends on the upload speed of who you are downloading off. So if your recieving a file from someone in the dark ages (dial up) then it will be slow, very slow

better to drag the files into the messenger windows, dont use file sharing tool, thats more dependant on open ports than dragging the items one at a time

I think that the problem might be that MSN sends the file to the server then on to you, so it's not a direct connection. I was told that a while ago by someone when we were discussing why iChat (Apple IM client) transfers files quicker than MSN. We tried a test with the same file via MSN and then via iChat and iChat was always quicker due to it performing a direct transfer.

yep that is a factor. It's also very open port hungry. video transfers need (or so MS say ports 4000-65535 open for UDP)
