According to reports, Sony have just added hardware scaler functionality in the latest release of the PS3 SDK. If you remember, Microsot previously made a big deal of the lack of hardware scaler in the PS3, especially when the Xbox360 was designed with a chip called ANA to do this job.
One wonders why its taken so long to appear, and why it only offers horizontal scaling instead of both horiz and vertical?
Interstingly, the SDK has added additional video modes such as 960x1080 - a cripplied 1080p mode which isn't as resource hungry as the full 1080p mode of 1920x1080. Cynics amongst us may asssume this would allow a unscrupulous Sony PR person to say a game is running in "1080p"
Details here:
Beyond3D - Which was nice.
