Default Graphics card upgrade?

Hi folks,

I've currently got 2x 512mb 7800 cards (in SLI so a total of 1GB ram) inside my pc, and was wondering whether to upgrade to one of the new 8800 cards (with dx10 support).

I know that it's a lot faster than the old range of cards, but does anyone know if a single 8800 GTX (with 768 ram) will be quicker than my current SLI 7800s? It's obviously quicker than a single 7800, but not sure about the effect of the SLI factor. I've been searching around the web, but haven't been able to find an obvious answer yet...

Thanks,
Iain

Why not sign up to 3Dmark 06 then publish your results at the moment with the two 7800's, then do a comparison with someone who has the 8800GTX

Because a) I never thought of that, and b) it means spending money

imo its a worthwhile upgrade if you are eventually going to run them in sli mode, you may be a few frames slower in some things with 1 card opposed to 2 in sli however it would be marginal. Also the fact that there is more memory on the one card than the sli setup should help with quality settings etc

Yep, but it makes sense for me to stick with Nvidia seeing as I've got an SLI mobo...

That's not a bad price btw. Getting tempted now

I've got a single 8800GTX hooked up to a 30" dell flat panel monitor. It's an absolutely awesome card and will run games like FEAR or Oblivion at 2560 x 1600 with max detail on. Things will change in future but at the moment I'm not sure any games exist which would justify SLIing these cards.
