Norton is a nightmare
SwissTony has told me how to get rid of it. Can anyone recommend a suitable replacement, preferably free. Thanks

I have installed and removed Norton many, many times and never had any problems.
When removing it, be sure to use their own removal tool and all will be well...
Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

A lot of modern viruses don't have any visible effect on the computer itself. They just sit there quietly in the background, harvesting personal information and broadcasting it to the internet etc. You might never know they are there. AVG is proven to be not very good at picking these up, and so is not a reliable antivirus at all.
NOD32 is great, and seeing as it is only £24 a year for the subscription it amazes me that people are willing to risk their personal data to save such a small amount of money...

That's right. Stick your head in the sand and it'll all be alright

Most modern viruses do not advertise themselves, (in fact they do their best to stay hidden). I presume you have analysed all your running processes, and know exactly what each one does?
Even if your computer is squeaky clean, how do you know you won;t get infected tomorrow. AVG won't stop it...
Oh, and to you too....

Another vote for Nod 32 , been running it for over a year now absolutely no problems , and actually speeds the computer up as opposed to running NAV.
As already been said whats 20 quid for a bit of piece of mind .

Really
Honest, I was on all day getting rid of it. If it wasn't for Swiss helping me, I would probably still be doing it now. I am surprised at how fast my laptop is now, since Norton has gone
I'm getting a strange message though, every time I log on microsoft pops up an error report, Norton blah blah is encountering problems. Err, yes, it has gone from my machine.

I've been having a long drawn out "discussion" with Norton about their latest 2006 version. My mum bought it for her pc but neither her nor myself could get it working properly. After several weeks of frankly terrible tech support, I finally managed to get a refund for her. I've now installed Nod32 (for half the price of Norton) on her machine and it worked first time, it uses a fraction of the system resources, it's quicker, and it does better in the independent tests. I've vowed never to touch a Norton (or McAfee who I've had similar issues with) product ever again...
