Only get one if you've got a decent TV.
I would recommend it heartily though. When I set it up the other day it was reminiscent of when I set my first PS1 up and the step up I encountered from my SNES / Megadrive combo.
I was grinning from ear to ear the whole weekend.

It's a quality piece of kit.
Some first impressions:
The new analogue sticks are the best, slickest and most accurate I have ever experienced. Absolutely amazing. Also now has 'triggers' like the Dreamcast / x360.
Utterly silent and cool running, even after 7 hours of play. No discernible fan noise and the unit stayed cool throughout.
Built in wifi is a boon, makes getting online nice and easy.
Download speeds are a bit slower than x360 but not especially bad.
Some good demo and free content available including a comprehensive GTHD demo.
No HDMI cable in the box, which is bad, although personally I always use reference cables anyway.
Much bigger than I expected, but looks fantastic nonetheless.
Amazing connectivity including various USB and memory card slots as well as wifi and bluetooth.
Some great download games, like gripshift, and flow due out this week.
needs more / better retail games asap.
No media streaming from your PC. Yet.
No video or music content to download. Yet.
Testing the bluray player tomorrow. Will report back.
No microphone in the box, although when playing online against 'randoms' I never use mine, it's good to have for chatting to mates. I wonder if a bluetooth phone mic will work??

Weird that. Everybody else seems to hate the sticks. I thought I was the only person that liked them.
There are trailers you can download. I downloaded the Casino Royale one in 1080p. It looks awesome and made the DVD version I watched later look like VHS.
I set my PSP up on remote play so you can watch videos from your PS3 on that in other rooms. Very neat.
Do you know when you can start downloading PS1 games onto your PSP via your PS3?

I have been a Sony only gamer for about 12 years, owned several machines and a LOT of games.
About 6 months ago I had a serious look at the specs of the 360 and PS3 and what games would be avaliable for each (almost the same), and as my only real need was for a games machine (not HD-DVD, or media centre etc) then the 360 stacked up the best for the gamer in my position.
I think the problem that will come of the PS3 is that the code guys are going to struggle with it for some time. Just look how many PS3 games there are at the moment and how many there are planned. They are taking a long time to code.
I think the defining moment for the 360 this year will be the release of Halo 3. That game alone could really show up the PS3... or not as the case may be.. also as a hint of the power of the next gen consoles before Halo3 take a look at Forza Motorsport in May/June - should be the first game to really load up the 360.

I think this gen will be a reverse for me on the last gen.
Last time round, I got a PS2 (after about 2 years of them being released), and then an XBox about 2 years after that. This time, I'm likely to get a 360 Elite sometime later this year (to play Forza 2) and then a PS3 maybe next year or the year after. Not bad considering I get bored of games these days very quickly
No HD TV for me. Still using our 36" Sony CRT. It's only 6 years old, bought off a mate last year for £75 and can't match value for money like that with a new HD screen. Also waiting to see if/when the OLED and SED technology arrives and see how that affects the market.
The PS2 for me was my first DVD player, and apart from the user interface, was pretty good, so was a good free bonus to the console. The Bluray for me doesn't warrant spending the extra right now.
I think the two consoles appear comparable, with the 360 having a headstart on a tried and tested online system. Being a miserable git, that doesn't overly interest me, but some killer single player games would, and Forza looks to be the one to tempt me. Nothing yet coming out on the PS3 to overly pique my interest, but I'm sure there will be in time.

My only comment to that would be, for either 360 or PS3, you need a HDTV to get the best performance. It really is a massive step up, simply stepping up from CRT To HDTV with a HD input is more noticeable than, say the difference in general graphical detail from PS2 to PS3.
On a CRT screen you may struggle to spot the difference of some X360 games from the Xbox 1. On HDTV you cannot fail to notice the difference.

Graphics don't make my games Ed
Which is why I get bored of them so quick. Too much repetitiveness in a lot of them, and lack of decent story lines.
Love the FF series on PS2 due to story and RPG elements (currently 60+ hours in to FFXII and the graphics look fine to me).
One particular game on XBox 1 that stood out was Dark Corners of the Earth, because it was challenging, and had a good story.
Buggered if I'm buying a HDTV as well as a console. Maybe I should just abandon next gen gaming if it's all about eye candy
Can't justify buying a HD TV when I have a perfectly useable working CRT one that doesn't get much use as most TV is pap!

I use my 360 on my normal definition Panasonic 42" pwd6 plasma and it looks superb. I've got the 360 set up to output HD via the component cables, and the tv handles the conversion. Looks significantly better than running the console in lo-def settings, and to be honest, doesn't look much different to my brothers 43" HD pioneer plasma, (which is the main reason I haven't upgraded yet).
Not sure whether you could do the same with a crt though...

Hanslow you finally going to sell the those shares in Sony then
If you do plump for the 360, don't know if you've played/seen Oblivion but it's one hell of a game with a decent story. Most who have played have given it a good 100hrs, with one expansion adding another good 20hrs and another due shortly with a claimed 30hrs extra, which to be honest you can't knock.
The elite i don't think will be much more than the current premium £280ish, it'd go against their [MS] claims of keeping costs down to then go and stick one on par with the PS3, which as seems to have been agreed is a tad expensive, Blueray of not.

Jeez Swen, you have a good memory/imagination
No shares in the old Sony ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
I'm never an early adopter (apart from the Wii which was a bit of an impulse), and won't be for the PS3 if/when I get one. I'm always tempted by the games, not the console, and I thoroughly enjoyed Forza on the first XBox, and that will sway me to get a 360, as will some confirmation that they're better built and people like Iain don't get through three in a week![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
I've played and finished Oblivion on my PC. Was great fun, but I don't see myself going through it all again on the 360. I'll be getting the new expansion on the PC too, as that's where my trusty saved game is.
I think the Bluray on the PS3 is good for those that actually want it. I wanted a DVD player when I got my PS2, and it was good (with the RGB cable) for a long time, before decent standalone DVDs became cheap. Some people are prepared to pay that premium in the PS3, I'm not.
I'm no fanboy for either side, and it does get on my **** a bit with people bigging up one machine and putting down the other. A good healthy games market is what I would like to see, and I don't care on which platform. What would be ultimately good, would be standalone servers that allow joining together of multi-platforms. I know MS is moving to this with joining PC and XBox gaming, which is good, but it would also be fun to integrate enemy consoles and great a global playground. Having said that, I'm a misery guts and much preferred the single player side to the online side with my XBox. I bought a years live subscription, and cancelled it towards the end through lack of use. Can't deny that MS have done a great job with it, just not really for me.
The other tempter for me on the 360 is SWOS
![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
BTW, I managed to run my PS2 for 6 months before buying an RGB scart cable, so you can see how impressed I am by visuals
A 360 through an RGB on my nice CRT will do me fine for the time being. I've seen a 360 on high def, and it looked nice, but not nice enough to buy a new TV for (IMHO).
Looking forward to seeing what you fanboys have been harping on about for the last year once the Elites hit the stores

Cheers dude, best wishes to you too!
I'm a tight **** indeed
Looks like either console will be good, and both will be bought at some point, just need to keep begging for money off the missus for a bit longer
I'll at least be able to pick up some of the bargain second hand 360 games now that it's been out long enough. Will probably need to relegate the XBox back upstairs with the other consoles if I'm going to have to make room under the TV.
Just wish MS would hurry up and the the 360 Elite out in the shops
Would be good if it comes out just as we get paid our yearly bonus (assuming we're getting one
)

I went through 3 in quick sucession, but the 4th has been fine. It seems that they have cured whatever problem was causing the failures now. I know several people with newer models who have had no problems at all...
I guess the pw6 was an improvement then. I really cannot see much picture improvement between that and my brothers 43" HD Pioneer. Obviously a little, but not enough to warrant spending any money. The pw6/7 were generally reckoned to be the best of the previous generation plasmas though. I still think it gives a better picture than some of the new HD screens.
Mind you, I am very colour blind so perhaps the colours of the newer HD sets may make a difference which I can't see...
