Hi just changed over to sky broadband and getting connection speeds of 54mbps and very good connection strengths on two different pcs in the house. The trouble is that on both pcs now and again it slows right down until it gets to the point it stops and i can not get even the home page up. Does anyone else have this problem and anyone know what might be causing it ie is sky crap?

all depends on where you are in relation to the nearest Exchange. Mine (2 pc's up to three laptops and the Xbox ) usually runs at about 54Mbps which is ok considering.. (It was slower on my old provider)

Sky Broadband speeds do not settle. They give you the maximum BB speed possible at any given time depending how many people are using it. I have used it for the past six months and generally its v good. When you find it slows down pull the power out of the router and put it in again and when you reconnect it should give you full speed again.
To see how fast your router is connected load up internet explorer and type in 192.168.0.1 (No www. of http/) and press enter. A Box should appear type in admin in the username and then sky in the password box and press enter.
This allows you to see your router settings and the speed at which it's connected. The speeds you r quoting r the speeds between your pc and the router not the speeds the router is connecting to the net.
Hope this helps.

Firstly, it depends what sky package you are on, ie if its bt's network or skys network (LLU)
Secondly, ignore the 54mbps, that is just the speed that you are connected to your router not to the internet. Basically its your home link max theoretical speed.
Let us know what sky bb you are on, then I can give you more info.
Also I take it you are using sky's branded router (Netgear)? If so this is know for dropping connections and requiring a reset. If it is this router, go into the settings via your web browser and type in 192.168.0.1 and find a setting called UpNP (something similar to that anyway) and disable it. Reboot your router/modem and see if that helps. I dont use the sky router as it is quite buggy, there is a hack that allows you to get the username and password which you can then put into a different router

Thanks jaytc2003, the package i have is there unlimited one which they bundle with sky talk. I have disabled UpNP and will try that to see if things improve. I still have my old router "ADSL modem with wireless G router" which is 54mbps How easy would it be to use that instead and would it be worth it?

it is relatively easy to use your other router. What make is it?
I can email you a little utility later when I get home from work, it will allow you to recover the username and password from the sky router. You can then set this up into your other router and see how you go from there. I use a thomson speedtouch 585v6 and there is a tool available called DMT which allows you to tweak things like the noise ratio etc thus allowing you more speed from the connection.
The following link has loads of useful info as well, and youo can get the utility there I think it is in the technical section. All in all in my opinion sky bb is the best that I have had.

Dunno what most people have said, but I'd just call their support when it drops, why bother messing around, it it works most of the time its gonna be an issue that their end.

Do you know which version of Belkin? Most Belkins are quite good, and you can get versions of the DMT tool for a few Belkin models which will allow you to do a bit of tweaking and get the max out of your connection.

As someone has already said, the 54mps is the transfer rate of the wireless modem to the pc. Sky do up to 16mb, but when I had my line checked, it would only carry upto 5mb.

Belkin : Support : F5D7632 - User Manual
these are the user manuals and will help you set it up. A lot of routers have a quick configuration setup (mine does anyone) and its just a matter of running this and entering the information when prompted.
The username and password that you have, is it the one from the sky router or is it something sky have sent? The reason I ask is that you have a username and password to access the sky portal, but this is different to the router password.
