Anybody using this in a live environment yet? I've got to implement this as we're still running SUS 1.0 which goes end of life July 10th and wondered if anyone had any experience with it and if there were pros and cons?
Its only (hopefully) going to be a short terms solution until the all encompasing enterprise managment system goes in later this year.

Yep I upgraded from WSUS 2 a few weeks ago. It went fine.
I seem to remember that WSUS is drastically different from SUS but in a good way. It gives you far more information about what is going on with updates and clients.
I found the upgrades and migrating from one server to another a piece of p*ss. Just make sure that you've backed up the database and the content folder (contains all the updates).
I know alot of people that put off upgrading to WSUS but I don't really know why. I found it a pretty good product.

Thanks for your reply. Well I can't directly upgrade from SUS to WSUS3, either have to upgrade to WSUS2 and then upgrade to WSUS3 or just start with a fresh install. As our 3 SUS servers are currently physical boxes and we are virtualising before datacentre moves i'll probably go with 3 new vm's and start from scratch and avoid installing WSUS2. I looked at WSUS2 last summer as SUS was going end of life back then but didn't like it and Microsoft then delayed the end of SUS so I guess I wasn't the only one who didn't like WSUS2!
I'll have to check the database from SUS can be used with WSUS3 without going the upgrade route.

From what I remember the databases are completely different between versions. I remember that WSUS2 introduced MSDE or SQL server dbs and WSUS3 has introduced a "Windows Internal Database".
What you could do is install SUS on a new VM and copy across the database and content folders. Then run the WSUS2 SP1 setup. Then run the WSUS3 setup. It shouldn't take long and should upgrade the database as it goes leaving your data intact.
WSUS does take some getting used to and I actually preferred WSUS2 to WSUS3 but there you go.

Cheers for that, however others in my team think I shouldn't bother with keeping the history and just do a fresh install of WSUS3 on new vm's and just approve updates starting from the date of the last SUS weekend we did. I'd prefer to do what you suggest so will have a play on a test environment and see how it goes with both methods.

I plan to upgrade to 3.0 from 2.0 when I get back from hols. I've read some very good websites and comments from users who have done the upgrade. It looks very promising.
One think I don't want to do is have to set all the approval of updates again. It takes hours if you have it updating alot of the programs and OS's.
