Default Laptop to TV

Is it possible to run your laptop or pc through a tv?

The reason I ask is that soon enough I will be in the market for a new tv, and I was thinking that it would be nice to run the laptop through it.

Do all modern lcd's have the connections required to make this possible? Does the laptop need to have anything extra, like a network card or anything like that?

Thanks

Yes, its entirely possible. Most laptops will have either a VGA or DVI socket as do most LCD TV's, so they connect together just like connecting to a monitor.

For the best possible picture, you need to get a TV that supports one of your laptops display resolutions as a native resolution. This will give one-to-one pixel mapping a great image on the TV.

Depends on the laptop and depends on the tv.

Some LCD tvs have a vga input, so you could just hook a vga lead from the monitor port on the laptop to the tv.

Other laptops may have a dv or analog tv output. You'd connect this to either the dv input of the tv, or the composite analog input.

No network cards required

If you connect with a VGA, you will need a separte lead for getting the sound through the TV. Or plug the laptop directly to a home cinema.
Not sure if this stands with a DVI connection though.

Yes, same applies to DVI as it too only carries video, not audio.
