My daughter will be 10 soon and i suppose she will be going on the internet

what is the best free software that i can put on the lap top to stop her seeing things that arent for kids

win2k, zone alarm, avg, adaware, spybot are already on the machine but i was thinking of things that block sites

We have cyber patrol. Costs £20-25 per year, but its well worth it.

Allows you to block certain sites, block sites containing certain words plus have various levels of filtering. You can even choose what times the computer can access the net. Very handy for bed times

Oh and it also logs every web site that is looked at. Perfect monitoring.

do yourself a favour, ditch the laptop and put a pc in the corner of the room so you can watch everything.

I gave this advice to my sister in law and she ignored it. 6 months later she came home from work and found some 19 year old lad with her daughter in the bedroom with her naked. She was only 12 by the way. Oh and anyone thinking call the police, we did and they didnt want to know as he was stopped before anything happened.

Furthermore when we checked the chat logs the grooming involved would have sickened you. Again the police were not interested.

Nah, he just doesnt want her to find his special pictures.

Allways clear the cache after a Tug-a-thon !

Bodgits 19 year old I think may not have made it out of J4cko's mates house intact if discovered, imagine a hybrid of Tony Soprano and Martin Clunes in a very bad mood.

Make sure full logs of her surfing history are kept, perhaps set up a proxy server to record this which alerts you through email to your Blackberry if suspect sites are being visited.

Possibly a bit OTT and difficult for an average home user

hmm.. difficult really.. there are loads of programs to block site etc....

I'd really go with trust.. tell her she has one chance and that you're gonna monitor her... she breaks it once and no internet for a set time.. 3 months ? apart from home work.

Kids LOVE MSN so make sure she doesnt have a web cam and that you keep the logs of her chats..

I wouldnt read them as its private chat, but search the text for certain words !

Its mainly a trust thing now...

She will probably know how to proxy around the protection anyway lol

Another thing I have just remembered. When all this was going on the older lad laid a lot of mistrust into her regarding her mum and rest of the family. Then he got her to lock everyone out of her pc and password protect most things after convincing her everyone was out to stop them.

It may be worth considering creating a backdoor to get in to the machine. Perhaps if you are on a network create another administrative share so you can get to the contents of the machine.

TightVNC: VNC-Based Free Remote Control Solution

may be of use for that, IIRC it doesn't lock the screen out like remote desktop does so you see what they are doing, make them aware you can see the screen etc. Some however may feel that remote viewing is a little OTT

edited to add from a security point of view make 100% sure the VNC port is not open for external access, if you connect to the net via a router you shouldn't need to worry

try 'NetNanny'

This program allows you to choose which sites to block and which ones to let through
