UNIX - underlying database
we operate an aging legacy application at work, which I believe is UNIX based.
Getting info out is just sooooo painfully labourious.
Would the underlying database (ie where the real data lives) be ODBC compatable.
Is it a big job for IT bods to extract data.
Is there a generally used 'database' 'brand' like DB2.
Just want some general vibes before I ask IT, as I like to do my homework before I ask them.
Thx.

Depends what you are looking to extract. In the my old line of work I used to work as a Unix Sys admin/Informix DBA. Many people within the organisation I used to work in wanted data extractions. These were normally done via SQL (Structure Query Language). Bu that was with a Database called 'Informix'. I know you can do the same with Oracle. Depends on the type of database you have, and that it supports SQL.

On unix it could informixsql, db2, postgres. I used to work with xenix many many moons ago and informix was popular then, not really sure, I guess now you would find Oracle and even mysql.
Chances are you could get an odbc driver that will let you access the data from a windows box and issue sql to extract into a flat file.

Could also be Solid, Progress, MySql or some old version of Oracle,
Do a 'ps' and post the output.
Your IT dept should know what it is even if they dont know how to do anything with it.
