![Question](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/icons/icon5.gif)
I've posted before on this and thought I had it sorted but I haven't!
I can't view some videos because I get a message saying I need to install latest Flash Player. So I duly download and message says it's installed successfully. But it makes no difference and I still cannot play the video and same message appears again![Mad](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/mad.gif)
So I thought it might be Norton 360 blocking things and was advised by Symantec to disable Ad Blocking and Pop-up Blocking which I did and, for good measure, turned off Pop-up Blocking in Explorer.
Made no bloody difference. I have e-mailed Symantec for further advice but I seem to be off their Christmas card list.
I use a stand alone PC running XP. BTW the videos are standard stuff like nature links which my daughter can view on her laptop using Vista but without Norton 360 installed.
Comments warmly invited

Download AVG and Ad-Aware 2007. Install them and get them to update to the latest definitions, then disable/remove Norton and see if your problem goes away. If so, and you've disabled Norton then remove it, if you have removed Norton, well, don't bother reinstalling it.
I've rebuilt a couple of PC's over the last month and all have been running quickly and happily until I installed Norton on them (The owners had purchased Norton and thus I thought I'd reinstall it for them). Post Norton (regardless of the version or type of Norton) the machine slows down, startup and shutdown time are increased and it's an all round unpleasant experience. Remove Norton and things are back to normal.
I looked for a free alternative to Norton and was informed about AVG and it does seem to work very well and is nowhere near as resource hungry as Norton. Ad-Aware I've used for quite some time and is also very good.

Thanks guys,
I tried Nod 32 and it was fine as far as I know. But it didn't have an anti-Spam facility (at the time) which Norton has and that's something I want. I do know Norton is resourse intensive and machine is definately slower than it was using just Nod but I can put up with that. I have Adaware and Spybot and use these now and again - but I don't think they are active all the time as it were?
Symantec must have tens of thousands of customers using Norton 360 who also view videos so I just don't understand what is going on.
With old Norton products you could usually right click to disable but with 360 you can't do that and you have to go into thje programme and find your way to various "off" buttons. dl

The latest version of Nod32 (the Smart Security product) is available with an antispam feature. Not tried using the antispam myself, but the antivirus still blows the norton products (and most others) clear out of the water

And there was me thinking that Norton was quite a well known brand and really shouldn't be causing a basic problem like this ![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Plus removing Norton isn't just a case of pressing uninstall key as, IIRC, you need Norton's own programme to do it properly.
So is Norton causing this problem or not?
Off to bed to worry about it![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

When talking antispam do you mean the crappy emails or the ad pop ups when surfing the net, if you mean the ads then nod32 blocks all spam as a standard install feature, after 3 years of using nod i've had no problems with spam at all and resources are very low compared to norton/avg thus results in better performance.
Norton is a well known brand and sells on its name, doesnt mean its any good, just means they have a good marketing department

Bob - I mean the e-mail rubbish, viagra, big dicks, jobs in finance etc. Yesterday I had 159 of them. Norton takes most of them out directly and dumps them in Spam folder which makes them easy to quickly check and delete en masse. One problem being that I have a website and aside from genuine messages to david@mywebsite.co.uk I get messages to azx45@mywebsite.co.uk , complete rubbish.
Nod32 didn't do this when I did a trial although they said they planned to although they couldn't give me any details.
I take on board your comments about Norton but I was hoping someone here would say "yeah I had that problem after installing 360 - this is what you do" (Symantec don't help by not responding to my help e-mails). Of course it may not be Norton at all and I have something else screwing things up

Well I MAY have resolved this problem. After many wasted hours I found a site that said I should uninstall previous Flash downloads, and gave me a link, and start again. I did this and managed to watch a video that I couldn't view before. But I want this to happen several times before I am certain.
So it seems the Norton question was a red herring. I can't think why Symantec couldn't have suggested this as a possible problem as it must be quite a common one. dl

Just seen this thread.
The best thing to do for any specifically identified software problem is to uninstall all instances of that software. Once uninstalled see if there is some special cleaner program to remove any residue lying around. Then reinstall and try again.
This method works well for many pieces of software (Norton, McAfee, Firewalls, Office, Windows :lol1)
If you are having further issues watching downloaded videos, try the CCP video codec pack. The codecs are carefully chosen to work together and not cause conflicts. Before you install that run their codec removal utility to remove any codecs you are currently using. You should have no issues after that.

Well I wish you had seen it a couple of days ago as you might have saved me a lot of heartache

err, my bad its CCCP ..doh
Combined Community Codec Pack
FAQ - CCCP
Its a great project. Basically, if you install that regardless what video you download it will play. Al;l those strange video formats that people sometimes compress movies in that stop sound working etc, this just sorts them out.
You still need quicktime and flash for web browsers.
