Default find and replace in Word

I'm wondering if the following is possible:

I want to go through various files deleting references to figures, e.g. (fig. 1), (fig. 2), (fig. 12) etc. Is there a way of using wildcards in the Find and Replace function that will ignore the numbers in each one but still remove the whole reference?

Thanks
Nick

Bored in work so thought I would try and help you out!

Edit-Replace

Click 'More'

Tick 'Use Wildcards'

Then type in fig???? in the Find what box, leaving the replace box empty

It'll replace all of them - if you add another ? it will replace fig. 100 etc. also as the ? is per character.
