my computer is not working very well.

Here's what happens, I turn it on, no probs, the windows 98 bit comes up and I input my password as the desktop loads up after a couple of seconds the screen goes mental and I get the message

'Out of Frequency' the power management then switches the monitor off.

Is my monitor kaput? I can boot up in safe mode (more by accident tho).

Any idea's?

Have you changed your desktop settings recently?

Sounds to me like you've selected a setting thats beyond its capabilities and once you go to login and the setting is applied its falling over. Or you've updated the gfx card driver or directx which has spun it out, or you've put a new gfx card.

boot into safe mode and see if you can turn the display settings down just to get it working in non safe mode (as safe mode doesnt load your device drivers so you may have fun and games doing this).

Failing that, it would be a good idea to figure out what you've done that caused it.

I've not changed anything - it was working fine the last time I used it which is why I'm stuck as I don't know why it would all of a sudden stop working.

sounds like the refresh rate is set higher than the monitor can cope with. If the monitor works in safe mode it is probably OK.Do you have a video card control panel (not the windows one)? This should be accesible in safe mode, then follow above instructions

not installed anything new although the other day I did try to update my Norton AntiVirus but the download failed after about 70%. It worrked fine after that, until I tried switching it on the next day. It's running on Windows 98.

I'll have a go a changing the refresh rate etc. when I get in tonight.

Thanks for your help guys.

twas a virus!!!!

basically it kept crashing when the desktop was changing so we had the idea to take this line out of the startup process in the file Winini or something, on doing this Norton found a virus deletd the infected files and then scanned all files 15 files were deleted.

The following virus's were found

KaKworm
W32.Badtrans

According to Norton some of the Badtrans ones were quite rare.

Well it **seems** to be working now!!!

Badtrans seems to be doing the rounds at the moment, this box had it recently and my dad's box which is sat on the floor waiting to be de-virused has it. AFAIK it sends itself out in blank e-mails with a notepad attachment, however, you dont even have to open the attachment, just view the e-mail. Pain in the **** or what. Have you run the programs the Norton website tells you to run? I had to do this to clean this box and it found about 15 copies of the virus . Someone somewhere thinks this is funny..
