Video game hardware sales in January were below the market's expectations. Total hardware units came in at 1.227 million units, 23.86% below the market's expected 1.611 million units. The disappointing total hardware sales were largely due to surprising supply constraints with the Nintendo consoles. Nintendo Wii only sold 274,000 units, well below the market's 396,900 expectation. The Nintendo DS was even futher constrained, with only 251,000 units sold compared to the expected 483,700 units.

For the first time in the United States, the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 with 269,000 units and 230,000 units respectively. The PS3 outperformed expectations by 28.5% while the Xbox 360 underperformed by 20.3%.

Yes, all the main analysts agree, PS3 will catch and overtake Xbox360 this year. Not bad given Xbox360's release at the ar$e end of 2005

Interesting fact: Of all the bad press PS3 has had, it STILL managed to reach 1 million units sold in the UK quicker than PS2 did.

It's inevitable the ps3 will be the biggest seller in the long run having a 100mil ps2 fanbase already.

I think the biggest surprise to most is Nintendo's sales figures, however i doubt the game per console attach rate will be very high on the wii. Most people i know either sold them within a week or boxed them up and haven't touched them since the novelty factor wore off.

I think thats pretty spot on - Other than Japan, where Wii games dominate the charts.

I am a gaming nut and I have a grand total of 5 games for my Wii.


I should think that in the grand master plan of MS world dominsation they are extremely pleased with 360's performance and rightly so - They have come from nowehere to an established presence in the gaming world and on top of that, have given a great deal to gaming in terms of competition to Sony and moving forward online gaming by a huge amount - I doubt we would have seen the Sony and Nintendo embrace online play the way they have without MS forcing the issue.

...and the blu-ray player - a 50+ year old customer of mine recently bought one on my recommendation for the dvd + blu-ray capability, then his business partner saw it and bought one too. Neither play games, but both have BIG plasma TV's!

Pity they'll be missing out on interactive features.

You can argue that MS could of included the hd drive as standard which may have swung things having 17mil units sold up to christmas, however i think they've done the right thing keeping it dvd with the option of the consumer adding either drive cheaply at a later date.

I think that's why it so popular - looking through the window and seeing you mum and dad on Wii Sports tennis is a bit bizzare!

I love the Wii - and I'm talking a week off when a Star Wars lightsaber game is available

I love the hardware of PS3 - but can't justify the expense of one right now as I'm more a retro gamer.

I bought a wii when they first come out the kids and the mrs still use it .But i bought a ps3 last year and im addicted ,dont even go to the pub on sundays anymore ,oh before these two systems we were gamer virgins
