Question

I have a toshiba laptop with IR port running win98, I have a Nokia 7110e WAP phone.

I want to configure this to use as backup to the 56K modem so I can get net access when mobile.

I set up a new modem configuration and enabled the IR port which started to communicate with the phone. I tried connecting using IE and it tried to dial my BT Internet number I use from the land line but never made a successful connection.

Is there something else I have to do or do you think it was just a busy line? I tried it a few times with the same results last night.

connection over a IR link to a phone is not always quick - if you can get conected - try a repeated ping to a well known address - this will give you an indication on the quality of the line / connection.

Obvious thing to check, the DUN connection is using the IR Modem?

Also is your BTInternet account locked to your CLI? If it is then you wont be able to get on.

Connection will only work at 9.6K too unless you have high speed data connection which will give you 28.8k but i dont think the 7110 has that facility !

Forget i said anything ! Got a headache ! LOL

Yeah as IanW says, Surftime numbers ie 0844 numbers usually link to the CLI of your landline and will only work from there ! You need an 0845 number access which BT should also have !

Calls are bl88dy expensive doing this by the way !

I'll try that when i get home later first then try the drivers after that.

It shouldn't do. They use the CLI to authenticate that you are who you are

Way back in September 2000, I was connecting into Demon Internet with my laptop and 7110 from Cyprus without any probs that I can remember. What Demon do have though is a line especially for dialling in from abroad, which is cabable of connecting devices at low baud rates, e.g 9600baud.

Of no help, but thought that tell you anyway....

Cheers,

Nick

When you try to dial out on the Mobile, do you get a 'D' on the display. This indicates a Data call in progress.

John,

Sounds like the Modem isn't setup right, try re-installing. When you dial up you should get a D on the display like a said.

Or you could try connecting to the Modem via Hyperterminal and use the AT commands to test the modem (if you know them)

No ian, will cost a mint. dont understand why it says it needs CLI then??

not sure what you mean by the modem not being setup right and to try reinstalling it? I am using the IR port on the PC to comunicate with the phone. What exactly do u meane by reinstall the modem in this case??

I know, i am a ****wit when it comes to mobiles. LOL

Exclamation

this is the page i refer to re the CLI

http://www.btopenworld.com/mybtopenworld/dialupnumbers/

I use anytime although the number listed doesnt work for me as the *******s put me on a dedicated high user line, i am thinking of dumping it, service is crap.

Your using IR to communicate between the phone and the Laptop, but you still need a modem driver to tell the PC what commands to send the phone.

Enable the IR on your phone, then in Control Panel, goto Modems, Add new, and let it search it should find a 'Generic Modem' tell it you have a driver disk, and point it at the Nokia Drivers you downloaded.

Then make a dial up networking connection on the laptop to BT using the newly installed modem.

Hmmm CLI with a mobile abroad will be difficult ! as the CLI signals do not get sent ! thats gonna put a bit of a crimp on things ! I dont think it matters what CLI number it receives on the abroad numbers but it does need a CLI to work !

Soz havent had a chance to go through the entire thread but have had my 7110 working with Laptop.

CLI is a possibility. also...

try dialling the number direct from your phone and listen to any message - you may get a message telling you to drop the leading zero. 95% sure I had this on at least one isp number.

Try any std pay-as-you-go number e.g. SIDC Lee's 0845 isp. If you can get that to work then move on to the Anytime numbers and see if CLI trips you up.
