I got one of these for under 500 quid the other week
dabs.com - HP Pavilion Artist Edition dv2899ea Core 2 Duo T9300 4096MB 320GB 14.1"WXGA Vista Home Premium (KQ079EA#ABU)
Not really cool, but a bit funky. My mrs loves it and it's got a great spec. (and 14 inch so proper LAP top and portable)

Dell studio 13 would be good. Small, looks good and powerful everything for a small laptop.
XPS M1530 is another good one for stronger graphics.

if money's no object then it's either an Alienware M15x or a Falcon Northwest Fragbook DRX ..... both serious bits of kit but like i said, they're definately money no object laptops

Alternatively, get a Windows based laptop which will cost less, and be more powerful
Could do worse than looking at the Dell XPS range. I use my lower spec one for play some games, and 3d modelling in Lightwave, so they will be man enough for the job, and they look pretty good as well.
I'd avoid Alienware at all costs. I made the mistake of buying one of their laptops before. Never again...

Your right...sold
If you have money to burn I suppose, and assuming the 3d software in question has an osx version

Well, when I bought my Mac it was probably £200 or so dearer than a PC equivalent. However, after 10 years it is still in use every single day. It fried a hard drive once, which was a Godsend as it meant an upgrade from 10gb to 55gb. It also split the ribbon cable on it LG DVD ROM drive, again this was a plus as it now has a DVD-R(W) drive. Everyone I know whom bought similar spec Windoze laptops at the same time are on at least their second, and one his fifth upgrade since Sure, the processor is woefully slow these days and it is long overdue a replacement, but it will be a shiny new iMac. I'm just awaiting the imminent new models arriving I would happily pay 10x the premium not to have to use Windoze
I also use Macs at w*rk and the 10 G4 Quicksilvers there were all around 8 years old when we were forced to upgrade them due to software requirements. Not one had ever seen a technician. Our fleet of hundreds of Dell office PC's have a lifespan averaged at 2 years. We also have 3 servers running Dell Poweredge units which require 24/7 support from Canada, which is used frequently Our two Apple xServes haven't missed a beat in 2 years so far
You pays you money, you takes your chance (whether you pay again, and again and have to suffer Microshaft rubbish).
