Default Quick RAM install question.

I've installed some extra RAM. Gone from 512 to 2000. The original chips were on one pcb and the new set are split between two pcb's. Now I have plugged them both in to the slot on the mother board. Is the one half of the new set going to automactically work in the slot that was previously empty?

Hope this makes sense!!

Dan.

you've got a motherboard with two slots and you've removed a single chip and put in two new ones?

yes, should be picked up automatically.

MB has four slots. I've removed one chip and replaced with a pair. I take it that makes no difference.

Cheers Hank.

so you have used 2 slots now instead of one, so each "chip" is 1gb of memory. If you motherboard doesnt support dual channel then put the other stick back in then you will have 2.5gb of ram

Ah right okay. So I can put my old 512 RAM into one of the other 2 remaining spare slots?

Plugged in. Sorted.

I'd been told that you can only use RAM in pairs, thats why I wasn't sure. I thought it didn't make sense at the time I was told. Live and learn eh!!

Cheers chaps.

you can only use something called dual channel in pairs (assuming motherboard supports it) I have not noticed any benefits though in running dual channel mode (recently built a media pc with 3gb, tried it with 2 gb first in dual channel then tried an extra stick thus loosing dual channel but havent noticed any performance decrease)
