Right, got all the shiny bits for my/dads new PC, now, all I have to do is build it, which is the easy bit.
But, what OS?
98SE would seem to be the LCD, but is it worth it?
Would 2000 Professional be better?
Or what about XP?
Bearing in mind he's going to be using it only for doing accounts and light stuff, maybe a little surfing, but nothing heavy.
Me, well I'm going to be permantly on scoobynet plus playing the odd game or too (maybe even online when I get ADSL sorted out ) we're talking CS, RTCW, Holligans, Unreal, plus other stuff, so I will be giving it a bit of a large one
one of the chaps here suggested doing a dual boot type setup, with 98SE on one partition and another OS, poss XP on another. anyone do this?
so, what to do?

win2kPro and set up a couple of accounts.
Or if you really don't want to affect each other, have two versions of win2kPro installed.
Cheers

Well, I had 98SE & XP on dual boot to try out XP, check for bugs, incompatibility, etc. I found it was fien and now need to keep 98 and now I run XP fully.
Great OS, like it a lot.
Have also had every other Microsoft OS too, 95, 98, ME, Win2K and they are all good, but XP is very nice. Similar to 2k, but fancier.
This PC is primarily a games machine and also inrernet, running ADSL. XP is spot on for this stuff.

Stability and usability go for w2k, but be warned always put it on a fresh - it doesn't like upgrades.
XP Pro/Home is really not worth it unless you want a micky mouse GUI and a bit more hand holding when you want to plug things in externally..

Cheers chaps.
Spec of PC, from memory (components downstairs in workshop at moment) is:
AMD XP 1600
Gigabyte motherboard
Geforce 3 Ti 200
40 or 20 gb hd
CD-RW
512mb RAM
soundblaster something or other
think that's it.
not the most awesome spec, but it'll do. Would have got a GE4 card, but the GE3 was a bit of a steal at 140 quid.
now all I have to do is wait for the speakers and monitor (flat panel) to turn up and then I'll build it.
Think I'll go with the 2k setup, sounds good.

much as I'd like to run/learn *nix don't want to on my home pc, mainly as I'd have to teach my dad as well, which is going to be fun on Win based stuff, let alone anything else.
do need to learn *nix, espcially as Mac OS X is base on BSD.

I don't know why all this anti xp stuff is being said! Yes when it first boots up it looks feking awful and I laughed at its cartoonified gui but once you tweak it back to look like win2k then its far far better, especially if you wanna play games. I have always used win2k but now I have played with xp I find it a dream to use for gaming. Far more stable than 98, far more gaming compatable than win2k. xp is great IMHO. I have 98se, win2k, nt4 and xp running on my machines and i definately use the xp machine far more than any of the others. If u r worried what to use triple boot it then u can use what u fancy on the day!!!!!

Im running Win 2k pro only game it couldnt run was Red Alert.
I highly recommend it over 98/95 XP Pro as im running all these OS aswell on home pc's
98/95 to out dated
Xp Pro dont like the thought MS in my computer + weird Interface, but of a muppet OS like Win ME i just wasnt keen
Also removings a **** with it not built on DOS
thats just my opinion
2k pro is dead secure thats why its widly used in the office and work place

Yes I agree on not trusting Microsoft with XP and it constantly trying to connect to the net but once settings are tweaked and a good firewall setup and configured then thats the Microsoft spying game finished with! Yes it needs more drivers, but those will come in time and hence duel/triple booting allows the best of all scenarios and can gradually move currently unsupported devices across to xp. But then I still run all external devices off a 98 box on usb so they dont tie my main pc up when I want to do other things. XP has pros and cons like any os, but in my opinion once tweaked it is very good and is the way forward.

Even corporates aren't that keen on XP Pro, most only going that way to keep the MS relationship going at a high level..
From a security perspective there too many little holes at present in the core OS for XP for most corps to get to grips with. When you consider that w2k is really a super stable version of NT4 you relise why corps are happy with w2k as the process of migrating over to w2k means there is little to be concerned under the bonnet in terms of security risk.

I've run everything from original win31 through to winxp pro and my personal choices would be win2k or xp pro (not home!).
Ran 2K from when it went gold, obvious problems with lack of drivers for everything, but a few months after gold drivers for everything sorted, pretty much the same with XP. Installed XP dual-boot with 2K when it came out, found issues with lack of drivers, stuck with 2K a while, drivers released switched to XPand haven't booted 2K in a few months now.
Running XP pro on both work and home pcs right now, zero issues, though both do have 512meg ram so I can't speak for how it runs with less.
obivous thing to do is check the windows hardware compatibility list

Markus, either 2K or XP, but it really depends on the PC, if it's Athlon then go for XP, saves having to do the AGP patch, plus all the AGP stuff is newer. If it's Intel then stick anything on it cause it's gonna be crap anyway!!! haha
