can you open them in internet explorer then right click and do save as... (does jpeg to bmp..)

Try Windows Imaging. You cannot get cheaper than this as it is bundled with Windows!

It is under the accessories menu.

But the default MS products only convert to the bitmaps, no?

No, I'm pretty certain Imaging can do it. However, if you are using XP, the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer can save it for you.

I use MS Photo Editor at work, comes with Windows95

Located C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PhotoEd

Sometimes no icon on start menu!
