Do it by hand to the majors - maybe use some submit s/w for the smaller ones.

Do pay attention to things like valid html, relevant keywords that are contained in the body text etc

Don't use frames or javascript navigation as they tend to confuse the engines.

Also, do not use tiny writing with foreground/background colour nearly the same.

If you're doing it semi-commercially, then there are vaious programs that will report on how suitable your site is for each engine and lets you run reports on your positioning.

thats a question I've been meaning to ask too.

seems like a bit of a 'black art' trying to get new the top of some search engines results page. Would anyone like to recommend a good piece of submission software for such use ?

Also how frequently do you need to re-submit to the big engines to maintain your position in their results list ?

the big engines are always trying to block submission software.

doing it by hand (!) will never loose you rankings!

fine for the less popular SEs, or even for checking your rankings but unless you really can't be bothered then resubmit by hand.

Just to add, make sure your Meta Tags are up to scratch, a lot of search engines use these for details of your site.
