Default USB pen drive problem.

Bit of a wierd one this, i picked up a 16gb pen drive a while ago to use as an x360 save device, only the xbox had trouble setting it up, it could detect it fine, it just could not use it, fair enough, MS claims that not all flash drives can be used.

So i started using it as a general backup device, but when ever i use it for MP3 or a video file, it corrupts them

Any other type of file is fine, infact i have just used it to copy some Nforce.exe Nvidia drivers from my laptop to my new office cctv machine.

But no matter how many different ways i try, i can not get the thing to copy a mp3 or video file without corruptinng it .

Tried formatting it, it had no effect
Also tried using it via Linux, it still buggers up the file.

Any ideas?
I suspect i bought a dud.

Is it to do with the file format you have used I.E. FAT or NTFS, I think with fat your limited to 4Gb "chunks" so if you Video file etc is larger it faffs it up.

I've seen similar problems on supposed 16gig drives, they show as 16gig but are actually a lot smaller hence when you try to copy a large file you find trouble.

Running a program now to verify the correct size.

After reading up on the "fakes" it appears mine is probably not 16GB

Will be intresting to see what size it really is

At the moment i am only testing it for the first 4GB as this old laptop has the prehistoric USB1.1 and it is going to take over an hour just for 4GB

I suspect it will be smaller than 4GB though..

Not sure, tried formatting in both, FAT it is fine, NTFS it gave me an error right at the end.

There were a ton of Kingston Datatraveller 16gig fakes a while back, at that time Kingston didn't make a 16gig stick.

OK some strange results.

As above, i set H2testw away to write and verify the USB stick, unfortuantly on my old work laptop with USB1.1

I set the program to look at the first 4GB as i was assuming it would be a 1 or 2 GB drive made to look like a 16GB one (seams to be the norm for the fakes)

I spazzed out a little and had it check 4000MB (so nearly 4GB)

I wrote this to the stick with no issues, and was going to take another hour and half to verify it, so i stopped the check, i booted back into linux and had another look at it, i formatted it to a linux file system instead of FAT, i could then add MP3`s to it no problem and play them back.

Bizzare.

Anyway i am back home now, so i have plugged it into my beefcake home rig and its telling me i have 12mins left to write the full 16gb to it, i am assuming it will be about 20 mins to verify it afterwards, then i might have a better clue at what is going on.

I have a few thoughts

1. could be an 4GB drive and i stopped a little short last time with the check, although at this current moment it appears to have written 6GB to the drive lol
2. could be an 8GB drive spoofed to say 16GB (would have thought this would be a waste of a "scam")
3. it is a 16GB drive but it is paggered maybe a proper low level format will sort it out.

It has failed on the verification, turns out it is a 512mb drive

Quick cut and paste while it verifys

DOH!!

Turns out it was not allowing me to use the MP3/Videos because i already had approx 300mb used up for work files, so it was unable to allow the rest on.

just copied a 365mb video onto it with no issues now it is empty
