I am clueless when it comes to Laptops but my old IBM thinkpad has packed in. I need to surf the internet, do my accounts on Excel and my invoices that I do on Word. I have £400 - £500 but haven't a clue. Please can someone post a link of what they'd buy as I need one this week. I've been advised by a mate that it should be either Sony or Toshiba and have a Intel Pentium CPU
whatever that is as they are quicker. Thanks

£400 - £500 will buy a decent spec laptop these days. Brands are all down to preference, I wouldn't touch Toshiba for example as I don't like the look of them.
Dell/Sony (over priced in comparison)/HP/IBM/Acer/Asus are all good brands. To help you check out hotukdeals and the computer section as you will see what ever laptops are rated hot in there are going to be worth a punt and you will see everyone's thoughts.
As for cpu yes IBM is generally better than AMD. For the money you are spending you will more than likely get an i3 processor which is one of IBM's latest cpu's and basically the next generation up from core2duo.
This for example and from all places it's at Argos so can just go to the shop and get it:

I'm by no way saying that is the best out there for the money but it gives you an idea to compare against for an i3 cpu spec'd laptop in budget.
Ebuyer's search for i3 laptops:
