I've got an Athlon 1Ghz T/Bird at the moment. It's in an ABIT KT7a RAID M/board.
I've got the BIOS update so that I can run up to 1.4GHz (will the ABIT go any higher - I don't really want to buy another board just yet)
Where can I get one? will they part-ex, or does anybody want to buy a 1 Ghz processor?
Thanks in advance,
Dan

To buy one try the usual suspects like...
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...D_CPUs_51.html
http://www.dabs.com/amd/amd.asp

Don't bother with the MP as they are just 'certified' to work in a dual Athlon board.
http://www.abit.com.tw/ should have some info on Athlon XP compatability.

Dan,
My brother had the same setup as you (CPU and mobo). He tried to upgrade to the 1.4GHz chip, but the mobo would only be stable running at 1.2GHz. Anything above that and the mobo refused to get passed the POST...
Running PC Check against the system (running at 1.2GHz) showed no problems with any components, but obviously something was not happy with the higher speeds. Tried removing all but basic components - still no joy.
Anyway, the long and the short of it is that be carefull running the 1.4GHz chip on your board - you may not get full speed from the chip.![Frown](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/frown.gif)
Daniel
PS My brother has chnaged his motherboard and it is now running sweetly

Mate
Bad news just checked your motherboard manual on the web and you can not take an XP processor mate nor can you take a 1.4
Description: CPU
1. Supports AMD-K7 Duron 600MHZ-850MHZ or future 200MHz FSB Socket A Processors
2. Supports AMD-K7 Athlon 700MHZ-1.2GHZ or 200/266MHz FSB Socket A Processors
3. Supports 200/266 MHz Alpha EV6 bus for the AMD Athlon & Duron Processors
Sorry

It all depends on the revision of KT7A that you have. If it is a revision 1.3 Board, then you can use XP amd MP class processors, but I can't remember what the multiplier supports upto on those revision boards.
2 friends, one a work colleague and the other, Ptholt, both have KT7A revision boards and run Athlon 1.4's. I built Pt's one. I also ran a KT7A Raid board with a 1gig overclocked at 1.4 Ghz (10.5x133) for almost a year no probs.
Cheers,
Nick

I've just looked at the mobo - version 1.1.....
Can this be updated (thru BIOS updates)?
I've downloaded the latest BIOS update - KT74a
ftp://ftp.abit.com.tw/pub/download/fae/kt74a.exe
Will this do the same thing - apologies, but I'm not to 'hot' on mobos.
There's me thinking I'd bought a really good board![Frown](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/frown.gif)

It was one of the best PC-133 SDRAM Athlon based motherboards.
They only really released the revision 1.3 solely to provide XP/MP support for those who couldn't stretch to DDR RAM and mobos or those unwilling to do a kit swap.

So what's the deal then?
Mark's XP processor is a 1.6
Can you buy the new BIOS for the V1.1 to take it up to 1.3?
I've got a buyer for my 1Gig too![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Can I put it the XP1600, and start it off @ 1gig and step-by-step, push up the processor speed?
What would you recommend?
Thanks in advance,
Dan

The best revision for your mobo is the 7N revision BIOS with the 2.31 Highpoint BIOS patched onto it. Using it on the old girl's machine currently ![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Are you running 2000 or XP?
Let me know, as it will be important for the raid controller setup.
Cheers,
Nick

No. It is actually a physical modification to the board. You cannot bodge around it to my slightly dated knowledge regarding this, but again, look at the FAQ, as it is covered in there

What do you mean by stepping up?
The important info regarding whether you are running 2k/xp is that if you upgrade to the 7N/2.31 combo BIOS is that you must make sure and upgrade the highpoint drivers under 2k to revision 2.31 first. If you are running a pre version 2 highpoint bios currently, the changes were so large that 2k would toast itself if you updated the bios without the drivers first. Update the drivers, reboot with a boot disk, update the BIOS's and reboot again. 2k will come straght back up

I am not a huge fan of the standard Alu coolermaster heatsinks. They may be big, but the heat transference is not all that great. I have 2 of the Hoooj Coolermaster heatsinks with copper inserts in my Dual 1.4 Server and they were borderline stable. I had to put better fans on them to fix the stability.
Really depends on which one you have. Also, don't use the putty pads that come on them or standard white goop. Although not amazingly better, arctic silver 2 compound is recomended, but remember to apply it very carefully! I use a stanley blade/knife/credit card to apply it and apply it super thinly to avoid potentially conductive spillage and provide the best heat transference between chip and sink.
Cheers,
Nick

Hi Nick,
"Stepping Up" - clock the cpu @ 1 Ghz 1st, boot up, check.
Repeat the process steps of 0.1 until optimum cpu speed is achieved.
Had to do this when I had some dodgy RAM - worked a treat....
I'll look forward to the email![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Thanks![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)

You mean after you fit a 1.4?
You can't just clock the 1 gig up without modifying the CPU. You can increase the FSB, which isn't really recommended, or increase the multiplier, which is disabled on the CPU.

Hi Nick,
Sorry mate - I meant put in Mark's 1.6. Clock it at 1GHz to start off with.
The keep stepping it up to the point at which it becomes unstable (then step it back down one stage!!)
Would that work?

You cheeky bugger! You know that he brought that busted up system to me to bring back to life after his so called friend blew it to bits building it the first time!!!!!!!!

It usually helps when system builders actually remove the plastic backing on heatsinks when they fit them!![EEK!](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/eek.gif)
. I was in tears on the floor when I found that on Pete's machine!. I repeat, the previous builder, not Moi ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

If I was you, after you have done all your bios updates I would just put the XP1600 in as is..
Your board should know thats what it is and adjust to the correct speed if the bios updates have worked.
If the machine hangs then "Step down"
After many hrs of you playing with it and ripping your hair out you will probably want a new board anyway![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Good luck mate.........
