I'm waiting delivery for a new laser for my PS3. So I thought I'd play a few demos and download a few things from the playstation store. But everytime I fired a demo up to play, it didn't work, all I had was a black screen?
So I went to update the system, when installing it only goes so far and then gives an error code 8002f14e![Cuckoo](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/cuckoo.gif)
Any one else ever had these problems?

Hi there try these steps:
Go to the UK PS3 official site and access the download PS3 updates page.
Download the latest PS3 updates from this site onto a USB Memory Stick, saved in a Folder PS3\UPDATES (must be in capitals).
Plug the memory stick into any of the USB ports on the PS3 and try to run the update again.
I had to switch it off, and back on again numerous times still getting the same error but then for no reason it decided to complete the update and now everything is ok.
Need to be a bit patient with it (I admit I nearly gave up with it) but it seems to do the trick eventually.

I read that the black screen was something to do with the OS checking for suspect firmware.... remember when Sony delayed GT5 as it had to release firmware to prevent the execution of snide games? .... well, the black screen is a by-product of this, and is something to do with piracy checks.
or so I've read.
or so I've read.

Depends how you mean. You can still update and download games with a faulty laser.
However, if you haven't got the bluray drive plugged in properly, easy to do, after taking it apart then you'll be stuck in a loop of upgrading. But I don't think thats your issue anyway, so do what Jura said.

Thanks for the reply guys. It's stuck in the update loop at the moment!!!!
Did try what Jura said, but no joy, it's still in the loop.
Joey, I did the update with the blu ray drive unplugged!!!
Does this mean I'm fu*ked? I do have a identical HDD from an old Toshiba lappy, but have no caddy to plug it in to format and put the software on it. Or is there a way?
Feel like fixing it like this!!

Just plug it in, wether its playing discs or not, it needs to be plugged in.
Usually you can tell from the percentage it gets stuck on, what the issue is. If I recall correctly, 96-98% is the bluray drive. But look it up on the net to find out for sure.
But you won't be able to update without it.
