Default My PC is acting the maggot.

My PC has became very slow of late. It had a fresh install about 6months ago and has been pretty steady up until the last few weeks. Now it even seems to find running Google Chrome a bit of a headache at times let alone much else.

The specs are
Core 2 @ 1.86GHz
2GB of Ram
500GB memory
Windows XP Service Pack 3.

There is hardly any programs running other than Microsoft Security Essentials and it is used for MS Office and the Web that is it, so I don't understand why it is so slow?

I am sorry to hear that - when I had similar issues I used CCleaner which helped a lot.

Disk defrag - although that should not be an issue if you don't use it for much.

Although I am sure that F1 will be along in a moment to suggest that if your Windows PC falls below sparkling performance it is a user problem

the spec isn't that great, but should be ok for surfing and office etc.

rams dead cheap so might be worth looking at throwing some more ram at it.

I'd do a clean reinstall of windows. Clear the whole thing.

Agree that more ram would be good as it's so cheap.

Problem with Google Chrome sometimes loads more memory like other browsers(on mine loads around 6GB RAM,i was tried run with 3GB RAM and Chrome loads 2.5GB RAM) if you have opened more browsers windows or you are running multitasking...

Chrome taking from RAM most,Firefox and other browsers taking from RAM less(some lot less).

Agree with above more memory will help too,CCleaner is great and help too with registry and some undeleted files(temporary files).

If you have suspicion i will have look for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Combofix will sort you out

Second thing is worth to have look on Startup programs and in Task Manager have look on Process which taking most of CPU and RAM

Third thing i would have look is Virtual memory, this can help too in some cases

Run msconfig.exe from Run in the start menu. Then click on the startup tab to see what is loading on boot up and uncheck any you don't or looks suspicious.

Ever so tempted but its right down the list of things I need first as I got my eye on a 1080p Projector at the mo.....but before I buy that I need to buy a Sofa for my man-cave....and before that I need to fix the car!

Wouldn't mind getting into some proper computer gaming!

Well if it has Spyware or malware on it it is a user problem. There is no way a properly installed PC with the right spec of memory and hard drive should slow to a crawl in a matter of weeks without there being something else amiss. Surely even someone like you can grasp that?

Ccleaner seems to have helped alot, downloaded Malwarebytres and it found some unwanted guest too!

Cheers guys for the help. What I don't get is that in 1998 I had a PC with 32mb of RAM, a 250mhz processor and a 3.2GB HDD and it played games and made the internet work and now I need 2GB 1.86Ghz and 500GB HDD to read the same fooking forums?

You still could browse the web and do other things on the net with a PC with 32mb ram, 250mhz cpu n tiny hdd if you wanted to. You should try it and then realise how p1sspoor the older spec and hardware is compared to today.

You just get use to newer hardware as soon as you get it and forget about the older specs. I bought a core i5 rig recently oc'd to 4.6ghz. I had a core2duo E8400 3ghz, 4gig ram etc pc before and I was blown away by it. But the novelty soon wears off.
