I have a wd live 2tb nas is good basic nas and much faster than anything else for the price, streams full bluray Iso files to my media pc via gigabit LAN no problems and is much faster than my usb2 drive, would recommend one as they are also fanless and very quiet, mine is in the bedroom and can't be heard at all. Can also access it with my iPad and iPhone from anywhere with free app and can play compatible files via the Internet.

I picked up a HP Microserver for £150 (They give £100 cashback). It has 4 hard disk bays which are accessible from the front via a door. Add your own disks and OS and you are away. I have a Freesat tuner, graphics card with HDMI and running Windows 7 so it is a media PC as well as a NAS box. Much more versatile and cheaper than most 4 bay dedicated NAS boxes.

I really like my synology for features. I went for a four-bay DS410 (for Raid5) but you could get the 2-bay one. Lots of features and the OS is very good. I don't think power consumption is the lowest but it does have power management features (and wakeup / shutdown from iPhone and possibly Android).
Another option of you have an old computer if FreeNas. It's a free linux-based (actuall, FreeBSD) OS that will run on any old hardware. Great for filesharing / storage.
I'm moving over to some self-build hardware with Windows Home server so I can run iTunes and Plex to serve my TV/Computers/iOS devices/AppleTV. I can't run plex on the synology otherwise i'd keep it

I'm looking at using some of my old computer bits to run Freenas. I have a couple of 2TB hard drives ready to go in, but the motherboards are both 10 years old, though they both have sata. Just fired up one configuration with an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe, AMD XP 2800+ and a gig of RAM. Running Vista (very slowly) at the moment. Will this give me a decent server?
I also have an Asus A7V880 which might be better as I believe I can get it to boot from a USB stick.

I would say the XP 2800 would be fine for general storage tasks. The OS is so lightweight it's not going to do anything taxing.
I did run it on a core 2 duo but I think that was probably massively over-specced. I moved away from Freenas at the time as getting Wake On Lan / Shutdown was tricky at the time.
I wonder if your motherboard (BIOS) will support 2tb hard drives though?

Ah yes, I'd forgotten about that. I seem to remember there was a way round it.
May be back to the drawing board, but it did seem to be a good way of using some of the old kit lying around......

Not tested this but I have a hunch that a lot of the "issues" that people are having with these larger drives is when they are used a boot drives. I had no problems with using one as a data drive.

Gave up on the old stuff. The HP Proliant Microserver arrived today
Now I can find a use for those 2TB hard drives I bought a few months ago when they were about £40

My girlfriend has a 5 bay Synology NAS with 2TB drives in. sounds like a helicopter when they're all on full chat ! quick and with dual disk redundancy too.
It was 1500 quid with drives in it though.

i was inches away from buying a Microserver with Home Server when disks went "sillyprice" - so will have to wait until they drop substantially before getting my new toy!

Now have the microserver running on OpenMediaVault, booting from the internal USB. Very neat.
Now I've got to figure out how to configure it all. Never used Linux before.
Must see if there's a manual.......

More reading to do I think.
Have tried to configure in BIOS with 2 x 2TB drives in RAID 1 and 1 x 2TB as parity, but OMV will not allow me to set up any RAID arrangement (RAID 5 I believe). Have tried this both with RAID enabled in the BIOS and without. Also have miniDLNA plugin set up, but my Humax downstairs can't see it, so presumably I've missed something out.
Ah well, my son will be visiting in a few weeks, and he can sort it out!
