Default Good Desktop Remote assistance software?

I have to "sort out" PC problems for my family and it's really hard trying to help somone over the phone when you are talking to people who are not shall we say......"that great with PC's"..........

Can anyone recommend good remoting desktop software that means I can remote into their PC's and sort out their "issues". They tried remote assistance but that didn't work very well.

Googled the options and came it with shed loads of differents programs and I'm not sure what to plump for. Would prefer to use something thats free if it works ok.

Please help save my sanity because if I hear over the phone one more time "I've just clicked the thingy and I don't know what has happened" I am going to totally lose the plot

Real VNC - they can also see exactly what you are doing too, handy for showing someone how to do something.

There's also http://join.me (by LogMeIn) that's really good for one-off remotes where you don't already have LogMeIn installed.

Another vote for Logmein. I've used it with my parents a fair few times, allows them to see what I'm doing, plus have full control of their machine, very handy for fixing the odd issue here and there.

If you're Mac Only then the built in Screen Sharing app (got to /System/Library/CoreServices/ look for ScreenSharing.app and drag it to your Dock) is pretty good, or you could get ARD (Apple Remote Desktop) if you need to do more than just screen share.

+Teamviewer

No install required at their end (can operate on a standalone run-once client) or you can install it as a service and connect to it from a list of computers.

another vote for logmein, been using it for the past 5 years

the only disadvantage of the free one is no ability to transfer files -- but cut n paste works fine
