Default Which monitor:

After a 1920x1200 (or higher monitor) thats not a TN panel to tie me over until some better tech eventually comes out (higher res with higher refresh input capeability..fed up of the laggy 50/60hz crap).

Narrowed it down to:

This: Dell U2412M http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna...ynote_irrank=0

or this: Dell U2410 http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna...ynote_irrank=0

One is cheaper than the other, but the cheaper one is LED with a 6bit e-IPS panel, the expensive one is CCFL with a 8bit IPS panel.

I tempted to replace both my monitors, so may have the 2410 as the main and 2412 as the secondary (decisions decisions )

What do you lot reckon?..alternatives appreciated...just as long as they are not TNs and 1920x1200 or above.

1900? I thought their highest was 2560x1600 (although they are bringing out a retina laptop later this year). Anyhoo I can't use Apples as Ive been told I can't access all the settings via PC on the newer models.

To be frank what I really want is a U3011 or U2711

But, as much as I'd love to fork out £500-900 on a "good" proper monitor, I just know in roughly a year's time they will start bringing out high-res screens that can take a true 120hz input and have the response to match it. Meaning next year I'll have to fork out anouther £800 for the monitor I really do want.

This is why I've cut down to the u2412 and u2410. But I'm struggling to justify the extra £100, as £100 saved this year will be another £100 to spend next year.

Well, after pondering I went ahead and ordered the U2412.

Its only £225 inc delivery so hard to pass up as it should be a improvement over what I currently have anyway.

Hopefully this will tie me over for a year, or until whenever the manufacturers decide to finally bring out higher resolution 120hz input monitors with IPS/PVA panels. Then I can justify spending some big money on something better.

I'm guessing they are waiting for display port to become more mainstream on home PCs?

Got it

Asthetics are a no-frills matt-black with a touch of grey affair, but it has a nice adjustable stand. Built in USB ports will come in handy for keyboard and mouse etc.

Not done much fiddling with the settings, but even out of the box its not bad at all. Colour seems good, I can detect the dithering in colour gradients associated with a 6bit panel, but I have to look really hard to see it. Plus its soooooo nice to get back to a 1200 line resolution.

One thing is for certain is its clear that the backlights on both my old Sammy 19" 930BF and 22" 226BW monitors I have sat next to it are knackered. As there is a VERY notable warm-colour shift which I can't correct (interesting as the 226bw, used to be too-blue), and the brightness can't touch the Dell monitor.

Obviously because of the backlights the colour reporduction is incomparable, and the 226bw could never display blues/greys properly anyway.

Lag is about the same as the 930bf. So still have the old blurry judder that affects all 50/60hz LCDs. But no worse....and its better than my 226bw which is supposed be a 2ms panel....but is WORSE than the 9ms rated 930BF...work that out

Just looked at the date stamp and its sept 2005 for the 930bf, Which is about 50,000 hours of 24/7 use... but the monitor hasn't had anywhere near that kind of use - its probably done about 25,000hours, so clearly not not a 50,000hours backlight! The 226BW is dated Jun 2007 so another spit at Samsung.

Its amazing how the old panels have degraded over time, the fact its so gradual meant I didn't realise how bad they were - I knew they weren't right, but it seems they were alot worse than I originally thought

Hopefully the LED backlight will have a better lifespan.

Now do I buy another one as a second screen, or hold out for better 120hz panels to emerge...decisions decisions
