Default MR SKY MAN!

Is there still a sky man on here?

Apparently my line is unstable and thats why my internet keeps dropping off. I've had nothing but poor service from sky and want to know the following.

1: How easy is it to fix an unstable line and why haven't they yet

2: What is the minimum download and upload speeds a customer should expect. NOT the 'upto speed' depending on location etc.

I currently have download 2.4mg and upload 0.8mg. I know the minimum download is 0.5meg.

They really are winding me up. but whos better?

I think it's down to Bt I'm afraid. The quality of the line from the exchange to your house. The further you are from the exchange the worse it gets.
Fibre is the way to go if it's available as there's no quality loss.

Not a sky man, but a 'network' man.

Who provides the line? Call them up and find out how far away you are from the exchange and get a line test done, or you can do it yourself using HyperTerminal. They might ask you to move the router (other electrical items can interfere and cause noise on the line) and get you to change your filter.

When I was in the UK we had virgin fibre optic broadband which was rather nice indeed. In France we have SFR which is so slow and unreliable, one day last week we lost phone, mobiles and internet

€30 a month for internet and I am currently getting Download :: 74 Kbps 9 kB/s Upload :: 19 Kbps 2 kB/s

There is no minimum speed - for ADSL broadband, the longer the line, the slower the speed. I can think of a couple of sites that get sub 512Kbps as they are so far from the exchange.

Is your router in the master BT socket for your house? Is there any extension wiring? If so, are all the extensions filtered? You should be able to undo the two screws on the front of the socket (unless it's really old) and access the test socket. Are you using cheap (and nasty) microfilters?

Your phone number might not be listed but try putting it in here. That will give you an estimate of the speeds your line is capable of.

has your line always dropped off or was it ok previously ?

i only ask as i had this problem and after weeks of talking to idiots trying to tell them nothing has changed with my set up at home but them insisting evertime i called that i went over the same steps
and them saying i had a problem at my end

they finaly called me up to tell me it was because of a router firmwire update that they had applied
they then sorted it within 48 hrs

We are plugged into the main socket. There are 4 sockets in the house but we only use the master.

We were fine on the free stuff sky give but started getting problems when they put us on unlimited. Nothing has changed with our usage and that's why after 2 months of free they put us on unlimited.
0.2 upload is 0.6 less then we were getting originally.

I've got so fed up of them messing the limits about that I've now signed up with bt. Fiber optic baby.

yeah I had probs earlier in the year, similar issue. Turned out to be a combo of really crap router they sent, dodgy filters and a loose earth at the exchange on the BT side. It should have been quick to resolve but took a couple of months

My gran's Sky internet is 10megabits! All she had done was a openreach fellow fit a new master socket. Was pretty peeved as my office at work which is on the same exchange and can only muster about 3megabits (via talk talk)

This is a handy little tool for working out how fast your ADSL should go.

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php
and info on your exchange: http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/adslchecker.php

Actually the whole Kitz website is pretty good background reading when it comes to de-bugging your ADSL, so worth looking round it when you have the time

edit, oh yeah...$ky are also messing her about with the usage limits. Unfortunately with their dumb modems its hard to track down the usage to actaully confirm if they are telling porkies or not.

Don't keep turning your router off to try and get quicker speeds.

Routers need a good time to sync properly.

You turning it off and on all the time won't allow this
