Default Windows security centre

Earlier today, i was surfing the net when my Sophus anti-virus blocked a couple of programmes and put into quaritine.
I then checked on " check security status of computer" to make sure windows malware/firewall were on and saw they were switched off. I clicked on the "turn on" option but wouldnt do it- said " windows sercurity centre cannot be started".
Ive never had this problem before- so how the hell do you get it back on again?!
Its windows vista.

Iam not computer savvy so no idea whats going on!

Some antivirus programs turn it off, some viruses/malware turn it off, I've personally had both situations.

Hi there

Personally I wouldn't use Sophos Anti-Virus,there are better(free too) alternatives to Sophos

In many cases some AV blocking the SW,which think its the virus or trying to disable everything

Please download Malwarebyts Anti-Malware

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

And ComboFix

http://www.combofix.org/

Both are free and scan with those SW for viruses, malware etc.

Also worth using Microsoft Security Essentials, it is free, and very non-invasive even if it isn't the best AV software out there.
