Sorry but everyone is reacting as if this is a revelation and ground breaking news!!
It is long established that terorist group around the world help each other and religion and ideaology are no barriers to this.
It could be said that terrorist groups were the first organisations to adopt globalisation. They have always believed in sharing best practice.
IRA members have been caught in South and Central America and Libya and Syria have long established training camps for the training of groups around the world including the IRA. They have also been their quatermaster as well, Lybia used to send arms by the container load at one point in the struggle. So along with strong financial support from America, all put together they make strange partners in crime indeed.
So really this is about 30 or so years to late as a revelation.

The IRA has the difficulty of killing just enough innocent people to keep their campaign newsworthy. Often, this has been counter productive when there are too many fatalities such as the Birmingham pub bombings, when they risk losing some of their supporters for a few weeks. The muslim cause is quite different, without the need to restrain their terrorist acts in the interest of public empathy. If they can kill billions of infidels they will do so because allah sanctions it. Individual IRA bombers getting involved in their cause will not improve anyone's perception of so-called freedom fighters.

If by "Mobsters" you mean criminals?
Then I agree!
Anyone who professes to have a divine right to commit murder is still a criminal.
This excuse has been used, to the detriment of mankind, for centuries.
Whether one individual or an army, winning is accomplished by superior logistics.

I think the problem with the perception is that PIRA conducted a bombing campaign against targets on the British mainland and eslewhere against British Military targets e.g. Germany. Also cross border logistics and insurgency with the Republic.
The Loyalists in all forms were mainly local protection and retaliation squads with very defined turfs and operational mandates. This has been displayed recently with the wave of inter faction turf wars in North Belfast.
The war against PIRA was fought on two fronts. Ulster/Eire and Mainland, or Home and Away as we called it. With the Loyalists you were focused on just small areas within large urban conabations.
The fight against PIRA was an 'all arms' fight. That's to say it involved a lot of open country recon, air recon, and static rural OP's. These are very similar to those you would use against traditional opposition such as Warsaw Pact conventional forces. As well as urban tactics developed on same lines.
Loyalist counter operations were 95 % urban.
