Lightbulb You guys aware of what's going on in Madrid this morning?

Well over 130 people killed in rush-hour train bombings.

ETA denying it, could be Al Qaeda.

Not looking good.

No, but who else is there? Upcoming Spanish elections, but this is a bit extreme, even in the light of that. ETA's denial is the most worrying aspect. If not them, who? And more importantly, why?

Humans can be utter scum sometimes. How can bombing ever be the answer?

Al-Quaeda might target the Spanish because they were one of the coalition that went into Iraq last year.

Double bluff perhaps? Blaming Aram extremists is easy when you suddenly feel ashamed of the attrocity you've just unleashed. Some people are just sick, and have no place on this planet.

Saw this earlier - toll at the time was only around 15 - good grief!

Spain was one of the few European countries to support the Iraq war - maybe that had a bearing?? (assuming it wasn't ETA)

I think Sky news have just said Spanish Police stopped a van with 500kg of explosives on board a few days ago near madrid station with suspected ETA operatives on board.

Last month, two suspected Eta members were arrested as they headed to Madrid in a truck laden with explosives.

Spanish police said they were arrested about 140km outside the city with 500kg of explosives hidden in the vehicle.

And last December, Spanish authorities said they foiled a Basque separatist plot to blow up a train at a Madrid rail station.

ETA now blaming Arab resistance.

Al Qaeda might just have used the Spanish elections as a smoke screen. Nobody knows at this stage...

spanish authorites ridiculed eta , spanish authorities know it was eta and not al qaeda, coz eta was trying to blow up a train a few weeks ago and the police caught some of their members and they were planning an attack before the elections on sunday

Assuming it was ETA I hope to God they will give control of the Basque country back to the Basques now - no 'point of (imperialistic) principle' can justify the death of so many inoccents, and the possibility that those subjugated will feel the need to do this again D

But the old adage is still true, if you give in to violence then you are only inviting more of the same in future. If it is ETA then the Spanish govt could never be seen to cave in to those tactics.

But who did it ?
It could be ETA, lots of history of them bombing in the past. But given that terrorism isn't effective in achieving political aims, would they really expect to achieve anything positive (for them) with such massacre ?

Or it could be Al-Quaeda, they tend to go for co-ordinated attacks on soft targets, and Spain was one of the more staunch allies of the coallition (at least the Spanish Govt was, even if the Spanish people were not). All they would be interested in is killing as many as possible.

What a sad day.

I know mate, but in this case I think the Castellanos are wrong to hold on to Euskadi – to give the countries their proper original names. ‘It belongs to them, just give it back’ to quote an Aussie song!

If it was ETA, it would be the first time they performed a terrorist act without any prior warning via the media. Of course they could have changed tactics, but with the elections on Sunday (if they go forward...) they can only have hoped to give the Partido Popular an absolute majority.

As for El Q., let's not make a myth out of that bunch. Often attacks are claimed to be "in the name of", but most observers pretty much agree that their backbone has been destroyed for quite a while now.

If I key a car tomorrow, and call it "an act of Al Q.", it does not mean I actually was planned by them, or even supported.

I fear that there are many unrelated cells of terrorists who realize they can easily get away with it and destroy the fabric of society.

I know it's probably a HUGH coincidence, however, some bright spark has just pointed out on the radio, that it's been 911 days since 9/11. I haven't got the mental capacity to work it out, but it seems about right

Only just seen this on the BBC website.

Very sad, very sad indeed.

If it is ETA is a very significant change in tactics. Normally they give warnings. And in the worst ETA attack to date where 12 'civilians' were killed, ETA apologised...so to date this has absolutely not been their style.

its not Al-Quaeda's style either. To this day, they've never directly admitted responsibility for 9/11, so it would be unusual for them to actually claim responsibility for this attack voluntarily (and so quickly) in the way that they are supposed to have done.

I'd be interested to find out how the spanish government was getting on in the opinion polls in advance of Sunday's election.....

But Al Qaeda haven't actually claimed responsibility. It's some other group who may be part of them, or may not, that have allegedly written this letter.

Then again, Shrek could have written it as well. After all, it's hardly got a strong trail of evidence, has it?

Let's just hold fire and see if anything concrete comes up before blaming the bogeyman...

SB is right, there is positive evidence which points in both directions so far. We cannot speculate fairly with what we know so I think we just have to wait and see.

It is a terrible tragedy and my thoughts are with the victims and their families.

If we didnt have a leap year this year, March the "11" 2004 would have marked 911 days since Septemeber "11th" 2001 yes.
