New Spanish Government and Gibraltar
What do you think will be the approach of the new Spanish Government with regard to respecting British Sovereignty over Gibraltar, given that the vast majority of Gibraltarians are still fiercely loyal to the crown?
I wonder if the new government will remove the ridiculous boarder control that the Spanish inflict on Gibraltarians as they come and go forcing them to queue in circles for hours?
I wonder if their approach to enclaves will be any less hypocritical when it comes to retaining Ceuta and Melilla, especially now they may want to distance themselves from the large Muslim population in both enclaves...
I wonder....
thoughts?

Whether the Spanish Gov't stakes a claim to Gib or not will be irrelevant if Bull**** Bliar wins the next election, because Jack the Weasel will hand it to them, on a plate, gift wrapped with a little bow
All the Spanish have to do is keep schtum.

I should think that they will take the same attititude that our own Government did towards the 99% vote from the Gibraltarians to stay under British rule, namely that it was not significant!

give the dump back to spain, it's like a 1970's dodgy seaside resort, needs a good lick of paint.
<don't know what I'm taking about mode on>
they probably only want to remain british to continue their massive tax dodges

That locic would also mean to give 'back' Northern Ireland while they're at it.
If most gilbraltans want to stay british then so be it. democracy and all that.

I personally think the UK hangs onto Gibraltar for military reasons. Bloody good tactical island to have should the need arise................after all Spain will be neutral should the proverbial poo hit the fan again.
What will be the current governments stance be? I say for the time being it will be skulking in its corner after being branded the worlds cowards. This will closely be followed by fanatic posturing to Britain about sovereignty (trying to save face). This will closely be followed by UK saying **** off back under your rock (pardon the pun) and it will stay ours until WE want to give it back.
Cyniscism over

What are they going to if we dont give it back to them?
Hardly going to fight us now are they, If they give in to a small band of lunatics with an un achievable aim, There not going to pick a fight with the u.k. I guess its right that well give it back to them when we are good and ready.
Im thinking that will be a little while longer now.
Buzzers right about the value of the "rock" to the UK.
Itd be like handing over the accension islands, not gonna happen.

OK.
Northern Ireland can't be 'given back' because we never took it. The only time there has been a united Ireland is when William of Orange invaded and occupied all of it...
The Falklands (NOT Malvinas) should remain British all the while the people who live there want that to be the case. Looking at the state of government in Argentina I would say that will be for a while yet, even if B.Liar gets in again.
Ditto Gibraltar. And yes, Moses, that was very interesting but hardly pertinent to the debate

Ahh the Falklands what a lovely place that is I spent 4.5 lovely months down there in the worst winter on record!!! It made such a nice change flying from Summer in Cyprus to Winter in the Falklands

Am i right in saying that the Falklands has a plethora of un-tapped minerals below the surface but as it isnt economical to withdraw them yet we're just hanging on until it is economically viable

For those of you who believe that Gibraltar should be returned to Spain, then you may want to get your atlases out and try explaining why Spain has those two dependencies in mainland Africa and what the justification is.
I'll give you a clue - one of them has "C" as it's first letter.

I think after recent events the Gib debate will drop down Spanish priorities.
What about the tunnel they are planning to build from Spain to North Africa, I think they may be changing their minds now.
I have only been to Gib once, 1 hr in queue in, buy some cheap **** and booze, wander around, there is so much history there. I did not get up the rock, next time though. Seeing miltary planes and BA ones using same strip when sat in the queue was an amazing site.

This thread isn't about whether or not Spain should have sovereignty, that matter has already been decided by the people of Gibraltar. Having been to Gibraltar several times, and Ceuta once, I am familiar with what goes on over there and the way Spain treats the Gibraltarians, purely out of bloody mindedness as a result of that decision.
Those questioning the relative importance of this issue to Spain at the moment may want to re-read my initial post. The reason I started this thread was because I was curious whether the Spanish approach to Gib will change and, if it does, whether it is down to them distancing themselves from Morocco as a result of perceived threat of terrorism. The same also applies to Cueta and Melilla.
