its just the 'public' being vigilant. everyone got told to look out for suspicious packages and now whenever someone sees an empty crisp packet on the floor, it gets reported and they call in the bomb squad.

Difficult to know what they actually expect us to do while we are being vigilant. Can't really go around asking other people what they are carrying in their shopping bags. Sounds like a quick way to a bunch of fives!

I suppose the real answer is to report any unattended baggage that you might see. Just shows what a difficult problem it is. It might help however if the authorities published some kind of a guide instead of just telling us to be vigilant.

Whilst it is of utmost importance to be vigilant at all times, its also a useful propaganda tool for the government when there is an alert, bomb-scare etc

It's a busy-body and curtain-twitcher's charter if you ask me. Surely people need to have training to spot genuinely dodgey characters.
