On an Impreza, yes. It's an expansion joint, and why it is worth thinking why did Subaru go to the time and trouble of fitting it when changing to a solid pipe.
The only exception is the MY01/2 WRX that has a cat in the up pipe and no expansion joint.

The more restrictive the system is, the more its likely to heat up?. Is expansion at this point really going to cause that many problems? I dont believe it will expand that much. I recently fitted the HKS GT Ball bearing turbo kit to a friends legacy, and it comes with a new up-pipe, which is constructed of fairly substantial bit of pipe. Approx 2" dia, but about 4mm wall thickness steel, with no expansion joint at all built in. If someone can tell me how to post pics here, I will...

Our brand new STi7 blew the bottom up pipe gasket (triple layer laminated steel) in less than 2500 miles with a solid replacement up pipe. There have been other up pipe gasket failures reported.
My theory (IMHO) is that because the replacement pipe has a bend in it, when it heats up (EGT temps here probably about 800-900 degrees C) it is not just trying to move end to end but trying to straighten out and is moving the flanges thus causing the gasket blows.

Here are pics of my '98 WRX up-pipe with the heatshield removed. Many were surprised to find a flexi joint in the the factory up-pipe. Mine sprung a leak where the arrow is pointed resulting in an almost untraceable loud hissing and rattling on boost.

david, i might just make one yes, saves spending 100 quid ish on a replacement one eh
ive got the steel in the garage for the flanges, just need to find some tubing, im guessing a 3mm wall thickness or something?
as its only slight bends, i may just cut and weld rather than try and bend it.

I'm all for DIY, but just be very careful - if you don't get the flanges at *exactly* the right angles, you will almost certainly end up blowing gaskets.
Suspect you will end up using more then £100 or so of your time though

Nah... I earn a pittance so its ok... I was just going to hack the standard one up then get and exhaust company Ie power flow to bend me the tube... then fit it all together on the car and tack it together... but there should be more tollerance if I use a flexy joint...
I wouldnt cut and weld, mind you depends what you weld with... its just A case of how flat the weld sits...

Making a subaru up-pipe...easy peasy. With a little time and patience, and a big angle grinder of course you can make anything... Knowing my luck, it will blow out all over the place..

Scoobysport V Std uppipe. Note small diameter pipe inside expansion bellows.
I found that fitting this totally changed the response of the turbo. It seemed to spool slower but earlier Yea that sounds odd but it (TD05) would produce full boost at a low 2500 rpm in 5th
but seemed to 'feel' laggier. I can only suggest that the bigger pipe lost some of the pulse energy but dropped less pressure ??
Once on high boost, there was more power for same boost pressure.
