Default Diff question

Hi all…..
my rear diff on my 98 turbo 2000 has got very noisy to the point where it’s going to explode, I’ve got a transmission ending in 6AA
i bought another turbo 2000 diff ( year 2000) with a code of 1AA..
after removing the diff I noticed the offside drive shaft has a longer shaft (diff end).
my question is (A) is it compatible to use the 1AA in place of the 6AA?
and
(B) is removing (cutting the excess)off the original shaft an option?
cheers

those odd shafts were only used with the very early rear diff set-ups opn the original Legacy Turbo and first couple of years of the Impreza??
sounds like its been changed previously?? what is the exact transmission code on the gearbox?? TY752........
all 2.0 UK Turbo's use the same rear diff ratio of 3.54 so if it is original then you could simply get the correct matching rear shafts from the donor car and have it as it should be

you ideally want BOTH newer shafts as whilst the older shorter one fits I seem to recall there are some slight differences in retention / design.........
