Question

Both sides are weeping, one side pretty bad. Are these easy to replace by yourself. I can remember someone ages ago telling me this job is expensive taking it to a garage. Has anybody attempted this ?? If so, would you recommend trying this yourself.

Not much of a mechanic myself so I took my scoob to Graham Goode in Leicester.

Only one side was leaking on my scoob and it cost me around £250

It has cured it though

It is a relatively simple job once you have removed the washer bottle and the air filter box ( that is if you haven't got an induction kit allready ) . It is also worth replacing the the rubber washers that are on the under the bolts and the gaskets that go around the spark plug holes .
Cost for the two sides would be about £35 if you do it your self , takes about 2 hours in total .

I would say that replacing the bolt washers is more important than the actual gasket. When these are knackered, it does not clamp the gasket anymore which can cause it to leak. Any gaskets I have seen generally tend to be in good condition. Its also a lot easier and cleaner to replace the bolt washers first, and if that fails, then try replacing the gaskets too.
£250 ??????? the gaskets for one side only cost about £20 or £30 per side including rubber bolt washers?? Thats way over £200 labour, for a max of 2 hour job?

Tell me about it. It was actually 3 hours labour at £50 per hour, plus parts, plus vat. I've posted this previously but lets just say it was more than they quoted for the job when I originally rang around .

Ah well, their loss, I'd previously spent a lot of money in GGR on bits for the scoob but no more

If u r not gonna do it yourself, ring around and ask for a quote on a fax or e-mail (I wish I had).

Well I am mechanically minded so I would probably attempt this, i was just seeing if they're were any pitfalls in doing this yourself. Thanks for the replies, keep them coming.

We did this when we pushed in the plug on the cover when fitting a manifold. Was not too horrendous to do - approach just like changing the plugs except you take the cover off.
