Shifter pops outa top gear?
#1
Help! I've just developed a problem in my MY97 UK Turbo that looks expensive to me??
This morning I came out of a 2nd gear bend and pulled out to overtake the car in front. Bodged-up the shift into third and after some frantic gear-grinding and double-clutching managed to get it right before too much more drama (certainly the guy coming the other way looked relieved ...).
A few seconds (and several hundred heart-beats)later after getting up to 5th I discovered that the shift would keep popping out of gear. No problem with getting into 5th, it just won't stay in place. Getting to work I found that reverse is now a bugger to find.
What have I done, and does anyone have a view on what I am going to have to do to sort this out?
ta muchly in advance,
Worriedly,
Keith

Could it be the synchro mesh? - Heard that its a common fault (sigh another one) for impreza's, I believe its a few hundred squids to sort out.

Is therer lots of play in your gearstick I.e has your gearchange become very sloppy or quite the opposite. My line of thinking is that it could be something as simple as the nylon bush on the bottom of the shifter stick.

Ran it round to TSL where Glen had a look at it, off the ramp, and then performed the highly technical adjustment by forcing the shifter back hard against the other side of the car (if you see what I mean). Seems to have got me back into play again - tho it does still grab a bit when placed into 5th at high revs.
Glen reckons that it must've been something like the bush since the linkages are far too solid to have been bent by my frantic attempts to avoid an RTA!
When I get it back in for a service I'll let them have a nose round to see if there's not something to drag more cash outa me.
Thanks guys,
Keith
