On a later WRX STI for example - and I mean a reliable (not going to blow the engine up straight away) 400 bhp.. Just wondering as I heard it costs about £2000 to get a Skyline to this kind of power.

it probably does, but it takes a 500bhp skyline to have the power to weigth ratio of a 400bhp impreza and on top of that, 500bhp skyline engine torque is hard pushed to get close to that of a 400bhp impreza .



Aside from that, you are talking full rebuild with proper bits, plus external componentry such as ecu, turbo, fmic and exhaust to do it properly. Cant imagine seeing much change from £6+k if you start from scratch and know where to buy.

my guess would be:

turbo (or hybrid existing)
decat 3" exhaust
stroker kit 2.2 or 2.5
fmic
injectors
fuel pump
induction "solution"
and ECU is debateable but probably nice.

Must have forgotten summint.

ChristianR's 2.5 conversion looks to be capable of 400bhp, I don't know what it cost him though. there are some RR results somewhere, and those were for low boost

A friend of mine has been hillclimbing his legacy and has just had the engine re-built.It cost him £10,000 to have the work carried out.He has took it to several rolling roads and got between 395-405BHP at the flywheel.I dont know the full spec of the engine but it is a 2.2

did your hillclimb friend get titanium engine internals?

that sounds expensive, did it include things like brakes, suspension, wheels, tyres interior and so on?

Christian ought to get closer to 500 (or more) from his car going on typical upgrades elsewhere in the world.

400bhp ... budget at least 10k despite doing it "on the cheap" there are so many incidentals that need to be added in ... and different management is a must.

Well, it becomes a tought decision, 400+hp legacy estate (bit lardy at about 1450kg) or save the money and spend on some other machine.

Titanium internals wouldnt be ideal in a road car that doesnt get frequent rebuilds because they are too soft.

what grade of titanium? what heat treatment? is it a forging? any surface treatment? what bearings are being used with titanium parts?

Claudius, I know titanium can be soft, but there are many grades, some of which are harder than other, the surface can be treated a number of ways for further hardening, hard enough for a crank journal anyway.

Also, titanium rods wouldn't need to be hard, because of the bearing shells etc. You can even buy aluminium rods.

Well for £86,000 I can guarantee 400bhp - by a Pork 911 Turbo - it has 404bhp.

Or use some of the rolling roads down under - they always seem to get very high figures!
