Hi. I work for Castrol as tanker driver and we supply loads of scooby dealers.ie SGT in berkshire , Cross country cars Oxon , etc etc. SLX way to thin mate. All the dealers we supply to use 10/40 Magnatec. 0/30 not thick enough chap hope this helps you ?

I spoke to a guy in the Subaru Garage, he says they use Castrol gtx 15/30.
He says "the wrong oil shouldn't make any diference to the noise of the engine "
Any thoughts ?

Hydraulic tappets (followers) will be viscosity/pressure dependent to work properly. Generally, lower viscosity oil will make them "sink" and be noisy as the clearance will increase.

Same here, my WRX STI Type R 98 model has the same problem, I find it quite loud. Doesn't seem to be as bad when the weather is cooler or at night time, so I suppose it does depend on the viscosity of the oil. I am running on the Mobil 1 motorsport 15/50 too, cant see any other oil making a difference? I was told that this was probably the best oil to use!
I am also interested in the price of a new set of tappets, what would be the labour charge for such a job. I believe that the cams need to be removed for this job.

Well i went to Central Subaru (subaru breakers)who said if it is the tappets then it will cost around 2-400 quid all in depending on how many and if both sides need doing.i have boooked mine for next week to get sorted!!

With 4 cams wont this be very expensive, I was gonna get it done on my 16V GTE and each follower was £6 each (best price I could get) So for a scooby id take a guess at £24'000 each and with labour on the top, not much change offa 1/2 a Mil. But shop around you might get it cheaper.
If its an import your probably better buying a learjet and going to Japan yourself, we need some Learjet posts as the search never came up with any finds.

I've heared it can be due to synthetic and fully synthetic oil on turbo engines as the fully synthetic gets very thin due to the heat of the turbo? - Just to throw another point in!

Mine does the same. Had it serviced last saturday and the old oil (mobil 1 motorsport 15/50) just poured out like water!!! It was very overdue for a service but I didn't think it would be this thin. Since the oil change the noise has died down a lot but is still there a bit, but I'm probably just listening out for it now Does seem that an oil change makes all the difference. From now on I'm changing mine every 6 months/3000 miles just to be on the safe side.

I know it sounds simple, and I hope for your sake it is but I have an STi7. I took it in for the 1k service and the oil change to my surprise was Semi synth'. I placed on another thread recently that I thought this was really odd, but the service manager said Subaru don't like Fully synth'. Anyway had some work done geometry and the likes, and whilst this was being done really listened to the engine which was really tappety. The guys doing the work said the same and asked what oil had gone in, when I told them (after picking them up off the floor) they said under no circumstances would anybody want to put semi into a vehicle like this. Anyway, I put Silkolene "S" in, and guess what, no more tapping, and really smooth to boot. Do you know what oil has gone into yours and is it 10w50? I know I'll be taking my own oil in with me cos if its good enough for porsches its good enough for the scoob.
