tips on fitting an up pipe to a bugeyed

Getting the up pipe done and was looking for any tips on how to fit it without it leaking. I have a scoobysport one and have had the flanges smoothed off to make it flush with the new gaskets.

Any tips would be great

Try this link for some info. It is a USA site so you need the Yank:English translation facility on but it is a pretty comprehensive guide to the "underneath" method.

A couple of my own tips;
  • replace the bottom uppipe gasket - this one takes most of the stress.
  • take care to follow the tightening up order - the lower joint of the uppipe before the upper joint.
  • use lots of Plus Gas (our "Liquid Wrench" equivalent), and apply it when the engine is warm (not red hot) if possible.
  • don't be suprised if you get a lot of smoke from the pipes when you first run the engine - this is the grease from your hands on the exhaust burning off.

but basically undo the drivers side engine mounting bolt and jack the engine up so you can slide it out easier..

then it's a piece of ****...

Question

On the uppipe theme - does it give a noticeable change in exhaust noise (loudness or tone). Obviously you get extra noise from a turbo back exhaust, and I assume the cat in your uppipe absorbs noise? Any experience anyone?

Yes you do get extra noise, in three ways;
  • the exhaust note is louder/harder in the same way that you get from removing any of the cats.
  • you get more noise from the wastegate and general harshness from the engine - this is mainly due to the fact that the replacements are (AFAIK) in Stainless Steel rather than carbon steel. When I did mine for the second time (don't ask!) I wrapped mine and this reduced this problem back towards stock levels.
  • more pops and bangs from the exhaust - oh, and flames.

PS. This mod is believed to be virtually a requirement on a tuned MY01+ WRX - guys in the USA and Aus have sufferred from the cat dropping chunks through the turbo (it overheats easily on the standard rich fueling and retarded ignition from the standard MY01+ ECU at raised boost) with serious consequences. The extra power and noise is a bonus!
