Is this safe..

.. on a WRX ´01?
I did this on my former car, a Volvo S 60 T5. No problems.
Drilled an extra 80mm hole in the filterbox. Routed an aluminiumhose from the new hole to the front of the car (dumped the foglights). Covered the end of the hose with a very finemasked
steel net (like the one the missus use when frying). Got rid of the original "cold air intake" and replaced it with the same type as mentioned before. Replaced the paperfilter with a K/N.
I am plannnig to do the same thing to my scoob though not a K/N but instead a ITG and mounting an extra grille in front of the pipe? I must say that I don´t know what kind of sensor the Volvo had but it worked perfectly well giving better sound and better response.
Anyone with experience on this matter?

cant see too much of a problem, at least it gets rid of some of the bends in the pipework. would work even better if replacing with smooth bore internal pipe, as the ribs in the alloy stuff do actually cause some drag to airflow
