350bhp with the small slanty intercooler..... they say so?

Hmm, Jamie told me that he can supply our cars with an APS FMIC. And I could've sworn I saw someone's pic here with an APS induction kit on his MY94.
I think Tony's talking about APS TMIC, not the induction kits. AFAIK....

Tony - Wasn't aware that the later TMIC could be retro-fitted to our early cars. Do you know if there are any issues with strut braces ? As the inlet manifold etc etc were different on the later cars, it would be interesting to see whats involved in this.
Should have some AVO news soon....
Edited to say : should've read your post more thoroughly, Tony - well, it is 5.00 in the morning !

Just been looking at an article on Auto Speed's website (found from another thread regarding Avo intercoolers) and saw one of Avo's demo cars running a max of 28psi (water injection from 23psi) that claims to have an easy 350bhp. It has Avo's upgrade slanty intercooler which is about 1.35 times larger than standard and claims the following:
At 18 psi:
150 degree inlet temp, 52 degree outlet temps with 1 psi pressure drop.
The standard intercooler at 12 psi gives:
82 degree inlet temps, 58 degree outlet temps with 1.5 psi pressure drop.
The intercooler looks like this:
I got a quote on this a while back (they've now got a sale on too) and it's quite reasonble (think about £400 inc del to the UK)... al ot cheaper than the MRT version. What do you think to they're claims? I always thought that if i uopgraded the intercooler then it would only be for a FM. My plans for the future are only to run 19psi so would this be worth considering?
Tony.

I'm in a similiar situation at the moment, my own slanty intercooler has more fins bent than straight, I was considering making up my own FMIC, depending on the insurance situagtion ! As you know from our conversation, my own car is running 19PSI, but I think that either the intake temps or the fuelling is preventing full power at this boost level.
I must admit, I looked at the MLR intercooler, and while a lovely piece of kit, far too expensive for what you get (IMHO of course !). Have you got a link for AVO, I'd be interested in looking into this. As for wether it would reach 350BHP, well mines reaching 282BHP, but I had hoped for closer to 300 with the boost I'm running. As I say, difficult to determine what's causing the loss.
Let me know what you think.

What did the autospeed site say about the STi intercoolers? Mine has an STi5 one, just wondering how it performs in real world tests cos I know the standard UK intercoolers are reputed to be quite cack!
I can't get past the first page of the autospeed article unless I let them relieve my credit card of some hard-earned funds

52 deg' is pretty damn hot, especially when you compare it to the average 30~35deg from a good FMIC.
It may well be an improvement over stock, but at 52deg' to would have to run less ign', and boost, and probably run on the rich side, compared to a FM, and 35deg'.
I'd also want to know under what conditions the 52 deg was seen. Was this on a RR, driven on the road, or on the track. It makes a MASSIVE difference.
You can easily see 10 deg temp increases on the track.
Mark.

Paul it's a different article to the one i mentioned at the top of the thread.... the arcticle im refering to is specific to that car. See here:
avo turbo car
I wouldn't mind seeing the autospeed article on the range of subaru top mounts tho.... think im going to have to stump up the membership fee.

Surely this is quite good ? Not all of us want the FMIC option. Is it correct that with most/all FMIC options you have to go the induction kit route ?
Having said all that, maybe I can persuade that nice Mr Wallis to make me a FMIC for less than £400 ....

Mark... no idea where they did those figures. As usual with manufacturers they quote all sorts of figures but don't give enough information so we can actually judge them correctly.
I agree that it's damm hot... be interesting if they'd compared the standard intercoolers temps at 18psi and not 12psi. God know what temps the old Subaru group a cars used to run.... using the standard slanty intercooler and running the boost they did. Good job they had water injection!!!!!!
Just looking at the various solutions.... if 325bhp is my max target i was woundering if a FMIC is justified (or should that be im trying to talk myself out of spending £1200 on a FMIC ).

cheapest place I have found to buy a decent fmic
most people who try uprated tmic's usually change to a fmic in the end.

I think Trout made around 350 bhp on a similar TMIC. John Banks's car was around 320 on an uprated top mount. I had a similar figure on my MY95 but had to run W/Inj to help keep the temperatures under control.
Have you considered a Legacy charge cooler ? 350bhp no sweat on one of them. With an uprated pump/rad, you can put together a package for well under £500

But Andy, aren't charge coolers and the associated kit, a lot heavier? Then there's all that extra plumbing etc.
I know you've tried it and I'm not knocking it (much) but there are always compromises

Thats a damm good price.... but i have a MY93. APS only do MY97 onwards . I know i could probably fudge it to fit but would rather not. The only people i've found that actaully list a FMIC for pre MY97 are HKS and AVO.

Hmm probably. But as I said in a previous post, I could've sworn that I saw a pic of one in a car with a similar engine layout to ours. I even said that I wanted to make it my next project ages ago but decided against it as I wanted a newer car.

I seriously can't remember mate. I can't even remember who I sold my car to a month and a bit ago. Now I've got two NIPs and even though I told the cops that I've sold my car they keep insisting that I tell them who the driver was. I better write them scathing letter soon.
