Crank Position Sensor or Cam position sensor..
Check both these and the wiring... I would expect a CEL from them though...
Also check for a spark next time it happens...
any immobiliser fitted...
Also check the multiplug under the screen wash bottle under the bonnet..

I had a similar problem..... when i changed the roms on my David/Paul scoobyecu chip after receiving a new map. Put the bloody things in the wrong way round and when the ignition was turned on the CEL didn't come on. Tried to start it and it just turned over. You may not have a chip but maybe it's a fault in the actual ecu.... dry joint maybe?

no engine check light when you turn on the ignition points to an ECU or loom problem.
CHeck the multi plugs behing the battery.
Check the plugs in the ecu
After that I don't know.
ECU on legacy is above your right knee when sitting in the drivers seat, you need to remove the panel under the steering column and get under the dash with a 10mm socket and extension, ecu is bolted up with 2 M6 nuts.
Could be power to the ecu that is the fundamental problem.

Thanks for the replies. I will have a good look on monday to try and find the cause. The car has got a immobiliser on it and the wiring for it is in the same area as the reset plugs so one train of thought was i moved perhaps a faulty connection.I also noticed on the last two occasions earlier in the day when starting the car it would start but straight away but stop.Although it did start next turn of the key

Hey Leggy,
Does it seem not to start when its warmed up?
i.e. if its left for a bit, does it start ok?
I had this problem with my old 94 WRX. Took it into my local garage, and got them to remove the water temp sensor and clean it up. This solved the problem for me, and only cost £40!

next time check to see if you are getting 12v across the fuel pump... I would check relays etc and make sure its not the immobiliser either.
