Being new to this Scooby thing, can anybody tell me if my 96 WRX wagon is supposed to have a fairly loud whine from the turbo when accelerating over 3000 rpm? Seems to have plenty power. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Question

Turbo's normally sound like a hiss more than a whine.
ssssssSSSSSSSSSSS S S S S S S S TSH
ssssSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS S S S S S TSSSH
is pretty much the accepted noise.

If you have a straight thru exhaust and good induction and tweaked boost you will probably get 'boost roar', where the sound of the air being forced through the engine actually drowns out the engine noise. a sort of:

chwarcharcharcharcharcharchARCHARCH noise.

Er....I hope that helps?

My vf23 developed a whine - turned out to be a broken compressor blade (or two ).

However, I guess you've got a td05? This is a bit stronger. You'll either need to strip it off and take a look, or let someone familar with Scoobs have a listen. It could last for ages, it could grenade itself into pieces tomorrow (my vf23 still ran well, was just a little slower to spool...only power ran it a couple of times though, not *that* brave ).

Steve,

I love the sound effects, perhaps you could individual ones for people, a bit like the Carartz characatures.

Oh dear,

I've just reread my post and had a terrible case of Deja Vu, remembering that I posted a similar suggestion about 12-18 months ago!

Sorry to hijack the thread, I would also suggest finding someone local who knows Scoobs to have a listen.

Perhaps post the question in the Scottish forum, they're a very friendly bunch!

Thanks for the suggestions.Accelerated fast past something today and the whine suddenly got louder and deeper so im pretty sure the turbos knackered however I know of a turbo from an STI2 and a good man to fit it so that will be a little project for the new year and I'll just have to treat it gently until then. I'll have a good look at it tomorrow just in case its a split pipe to the turbo but i'm not too hopeful. Anybody got any idea of the price of a used turbo? thanks again all.
