As it would appear that the requested 'projects' forum is not going to be available, I have a suggestion for differentiating between the current 'General Technical' and 'Drivetrain'

Currently, there appears to be no demarcation between the two titles, in the search for something 'interesting' I find it can be a bit of an irksome task trawling through both forums.

There are a lot of VERY knowledgeable people out there who have stopped posting on scoobynet, most of them post their 'really technical' questions/ideas on 22B, Nasioc, MLR or GTR forums. This is a real loss to this board.

There appears to be a wider range of people using S/net now so in future there will be even more newby questions.
There will also be more people going for big buck, big power, high tech, pushing the envelope type modifications. It would be a shame not to capture this here.

How about raising the technical content of 'general technical' ? perhaps rename it (Advanced Technical ?) and add a 'sticky' to guide potential contributors. To get it started would require fairly strict moderation, anything newby or even slightly muppety (you know who you are) being decanted in to Drivetrain or Muppets.

Instead of chasing our own valued contributions, lets try and attract the other boards 'techies' over here and create a cutting edge Technical forum.

Over to you John F

Good thinkin Batman... But if there are too many forums???
Its a good idea, but as you say, the real answer is moderation. Even if some of the starters of the threads had the ability to remove some junk.
To give an example, of what was still an excellent project. Davids FMIC thread was very good, but getting to around 60 pages long?????
For a techie newby to come along and take an interest in such a thread, im sure the thought of browsing through 60 pages, some with lots of pictures meaning sow downloads for many, would probably scare them off. But keep em coming, as pics etc. are always good.

I agree, there needs to be a little re-org of the technical forums.

Quite how this might work I don't know. I'm still trying to work out the difference between the general forum and non scooby related.

It would be nice to have a project centric forum, or just something that isn't full of "what bolt on" type questions.

Having said that, some of the minority forums might do better if they were amalgameted, as people often have to post in the general tech forum otherwise it wont get read by anyone that can help.

But most of all, we NEED a FAQ. On average it takes (a maximum) about 3 weeks for any given question to be asked again, and with the search being limited (can we have forum as a search critirea please?) I think a FAQ would really help. Even if it was a "threads of note" sticky like on NASIOC.

Andy et al,

Whilst I agree that the technical content of the Gen Tech/Drivetrain forums is heavily diluted by non-technical posts, and that something needs to be done, I'm not sure that a new forum is the answer, as you have said this would need to have fairly heavy-handed moderation which puts a heavy burden on the chosen ones.

One of the benefits of less technical questions being asked in the current forums is that there is a good chance an 'expert' will read it and probably answer. If there was an Advanced forum isn't there a possibilty that this wouldn't happen so often.

Perhaps tighter moderation of the existing forums is the answer, although with the number of posts, this would also put an extra burden on the moderators.

I don't know the answer, I suspect there isn't really a perfect solution (how long will it be before someone suggest that the Advanced Tech forum isn't techy enough?) and personally I think there are too many non-Subaru related forums already!

Andrew...

PS. Not trying to be negative, it's a good suggestion, just my initial thoughts and trying to provoke some discussion.

Good idea.

It's a shame that we can cater for those interested in Bikes, to plumbing a shower, but can't find the space for this.

It wouldn't be so bad if the "search" facility was useable, so that the same questions weren't asked time, and time again.

Mark.

I thought about bringing up the search problem again but didn't want to open up old wounds, however, now that Mark has done it - what about a subscription search facility? But then again this wouldn't stop the weekly 'best backbox' question.

Andrew...

Thumbs up

I've added my support in the General forum but i might as well do it here as well. If we could have the search facility like it used to be (back in the day) that would be great too .

Got to agree with Mark.... i've said it before but i find it stupid that on a Subaru BBS i can have a forum that tells me how to unblock the toilet but we can't have more dedicated technical forums .

Exclamation

As "General technical" moderator I supose it is my desision as to what stays in Gen.tech. but as you have all stated the boundaries have become blured
There is so much Drivetrain stuff in Gen.Tech I would probably get flamed for over "Moderating!!" if I was to move all the threads to Drivetrain

So what should the Drivetrain forum cover? (engine, gearbox! What about ECU's and air filters?)
Should General tech. be left for questions that don't fall into any other forum?

Maybe "Styling" and "Interior" could be amalgamated?
Could "Suspension" be included under "Wheels, tyres and brakes"?

I would value your opinions as it would make all our lives easier if things where in the correct forums

Cool

Andy,

Thanks for raising this gem again as with many others I`ve given up using the search facility thats currently available, and trawling through posts is such a laborous task that 9/10 times I end up just phoning 1 of the top 10 to get an answer As most of the time it`s an emergency and the scoobs laid up whilst I`m looking . Hopefully we`ll get somewhere this time.

Dyney,

4WIW i`ll stick my 2p in here re the categorisation of topics
IMHO the headers cover the following :

Drivetrain : drive shafts, diffs, gearbox, flywheel, clutch and any parts from there back which contribute to the wheels turning.

Suspension : springs, dampers, struts, strut tops, swaybars, bushes, swaybar links and all parts which contribute to handling.

Wheels, tyres & brakes : Anything attached to the driven end of the axles.

Lighting & electrical : Anything which requires electricity as its main source of energy.

General : For none of the above, cooling systems, air systems, fuel systems, fluids, paints, etc.

Perhaps these classifications do need further refinement, possibly some further feedback could be given from other members, so everyone is "singing the same song" ? Maybe even add a header for
"engine related" and as Andy suggested "experimental" ?
I can sympathise with the mods, it`s a thankless task and u`ll never keep every1 happy. As you, more than us serfs know though ease of use is king and it`s what keeps peebs coming back.

Keep up the good work

Pete
